Hi this is my first time here, but I have read many posts.
I have a 1.5 year old skinny pig named Wilbur. Sweetest little guy, well about 10 days ago I noticed a blue cloud in his right eye. I took him to the vet, and indeed he had a hay poke along with a small laceration , the vet was able to remove the piece of hay and prescribed him tobramycin eye drops along with some pain medication to be given for 7 days. Although the medication seemed to work it seems like it plateaued. Then I noticed he started to have diarrhea. I stopped the antibotics and continued to treat with vetericyn plus. The diarrhea has stopped I did purchase a tube of terramycin. Which I believe to be a better choice. As of me writing this post it has been a day and a half since his last treatment of tobramycin. Keep in mind he is eating and drinking and just being his goofy self.
My question is should I start a treatment of terramycin. If so is 1.5 days long enough from his originally prescribed meds?
Thanks in advance

I’m sorry to hear of his haypoke - it’s sadly a common issue to affect piggies.
Please see a vet again if the injury has not resolved with the originally prescribed medication.
Eye drops would not cause diarrhoea.

Unfortunately my vet is unavailable, I live in a small town in Northern California and she is the only vet that sees guinea pigs.
As I mentioned the diarrhea has been resolved. The prescribed meds was for a 7 day duration

I’m afraid it we can’t tell you which medication to use as only a vet can do that. We could not know any potential issues from using a non-prescribed medication in close proximity to the prescribed one, nor why the original prescribed medication may not have completely dealt with the issue - it’s possible the damage could be more severe, perhaps still hay in the hay etc.

I would like to switch antibiotics. I feel the terramycin would be a better choice. As I mentioned it has been a day and a half since his last treatment of tobramycin. My main question is how long should I wait before administrating the terramycin.

Only a vet can give information on and prescribe medications. We cannot tell you what medication to give or how long you should wait. If the Terramycin was not prescribed by your vet, we cannot advise you to use it

As mentioned my vet is gone for the holidays, I do not have a vet that would be capable of seeing Wilbur. I know for a fact that terramycin would work best. I

As eyes are the same in all mammals, any vet (It doesn’t have to be an exotic) can check eyes, if you can get to a different vet (I know vet care is harder to get in the US than it is here though).
As I say though, we legally cannot tell you what medication to give

Terramycin is a otc antibotic eye gel used to treat animal eye infections. It is used to treat guinea pig eye infections.
