Just a quick post so I can get some advice. My guinea pig has really crackly breathing, he’s had it in the past but it seems worse than it’s been before as he’s been coughing a lot. Anyway, i got back from holiday yesterday and heard him making the noise, wasn’t sure when I’d be able to get him to the vet so yesterday and this morning i gave him 0.3ml of Sulfatrim just to tie him over until I sorted a lift to the vets as it’s an hour away.
Anyway, he’s been to the vets today and they’ve given him Enrobactin and some Bisolvon powder. The vet really rushed me so I didn’t get the chance to ask him this:
When should I start giving him his proper antibiotics? Today, tomorrow? I just don’t know if there will be a negative clash between the Sulfatrim and the medication he’s been prescribed today. I don’t want to make the situation worse but want him on his medication ASAP. Any advice would be very helpful :)

Can you phone your vet to ask?
Do the labels give you guidance?

I can’t answer your question as I’m no expert on piggy medicine.
Hope he recovers quickly

I'd wait until tomorrow if he's already had sulfatrim today but I agree about phoning your vet to double check

Not all the vets there are exotic ones so the receptionist usually says she’ll ask the exotic vet when they’ve got a gap in appointments and get back to me but a lot of the time that doesn’t happen. However I assume she’d say it was fine.
The label doesn’t say anything about mixing medication, it just says to dilute which the vet didn’t say anything about and the receptionist said not to dilute it so I’m a bit unsure on that as well :/
But yeah I think I’ll wait until tomorrow and give him some then as I think he’ll be okay, I’ll try and give the vets a ring tomorrow too to ask about mixing the medication. Thanks :)

So annoying when vets don't phone you back. Please keep us updated

Hi!

Wait 12 hours between giving the next dosage.

Ideally you split the dosage into two unless it has been aldready prescribed for administering twice daily because of the fast metabolism that guinea pigs have. Enrobactin is another brand name for baytril.

You may want to use some probiotics, especially if the baytril is affecting the appetite the poos are doing more than just going a little softer than normal. Probiotics, Recovery Foods And Vitamin C: Overview With Product Links

Is it a URI?

We finally found a guinea pig savvy vets, our young piglet about 4-5 months old has this (noticed it two weeks after taking her home :() and has been on metacam and baytril 2.5% 0.2ml twice a day for the last three weeks.. (she had septrin for one week before..another vet) making a vast improvement, and now being a normal piggy except she has a throaty wheek. The vet said she would probably have relapses through her life due to lung damage..but she is such a character..I really do think the metacam helps also..Vet visits every two weeks..We have been offered an x ray for her lungs to assess, if when do wean off the antibiotics and metacam and it looks like things are going not so good..

Hope you get on ok with your pig, my advice is to get the antibiotics down him soon as..I am not proud but I mix it with a weak diluted vimto solution..so she isn't spitting while held or running away from the baytril..it's really bitter (hmm..yes I licked a tiny spot) And cucumber is now the learned treat for after this ordeal!

Ah okay thank you! Do you think he’ll be okay with the Baytril despite having Sulfatrim for 2 days, or will it not make much difference?

I once had a piggy who was on sulfatrim and baytril at the same time so it won’t make much difference. Just follow Wiebke’s advise and leave it for 12 hours :)

Don’t think it is URI. About 2 years ago I went to a non cavy savvy vet as someone on here told me they were good with pigs - they misdiagnosed him with URI and he was on tons of medicine constantly for about 2/3 months and literally it did nothing to help with his breathing. Since then we just accepted it was just a part of him and he was okay. It’s been gone for a good year and a half and now it’s come back only what’s worrying is he’s been coughing at least 5 times an hour which is worrying me! Think his lungs are okay though as he’s had blood tests and xrays only a month ago as he has an incurable liver problem so I don’t think it’s his lungs. The vet hasn’t said what could cause the crackly breathing so I think for him it will be one of life’s mysteries! He used to be on baytril a few years ago, he never liked it but I’m lucky he never spat it out at me lol, luckily cucumber is his vegetable of choice too so I’ll be sure to give him tons afterwards!

It shouldn't be a problem.
Thank you. Also, sorry to be a problem but, the bottle tells me to dilute with 4 parts water but the receptionist told me not to. He’s on 0.5ml and weighs 800 gram. Should I be diluting or not? Thanks again :)

Does the bottle give the concentration of baytril?
