Discovered blood in Jaspers cage last night just after I'd cleaned it out. Checked both boys over and couldn't find any wounds, I would have been surprised if I had, they've been together a while now and apart from one incident, they have never been overly aggressive.

I watched them for a while and it was definately Jasper, he had a UTI back in December January time and it took him a while to get over it, my vet decided that maybe he had a sludge in his bladder so he's been on a low calcium diet but I haven't been syringing him extra water for a while now. It's very strange this time round though, there's been no painful squeaking whilst peeing and I spend quite abit of time in their room so I'm sure I would have heard it. He's possibly lost a small amount of weight but nothing really outside his normal fluctuation. He's off to the vets at 2:30 but I'm pretty sure all they'll do for him is give him some more baytril to clear up the infection. I've started him on extra water, about 30 ml a day but I don't really kno what else I can do for him. Anyone else got any ideas?

Oh no :'( :'( :'( :'( not again this poor little fella :'( :'( :'( :'( rotten UTI >:( >:( >:( >:(
I have a friend in the US that had a piggie who needed a special diet, low calcium cause of stones she syringed extra water everyday and also used Shillatong, i can't remember if its available in the UK.... if you did a search it should you. If not pm me and i'll email this girl and ask her advice for you O0

Thanks guys, there hasn't really been any more blood since last night, just getting him ready for the vets now. I quickly googled shilintong and I think I might give it a go, there was another one mentioned which was polycitra which apparently inhibits the formation of calcium oxalate crystals. Think I'll go with shilintong first though since most bladder stones are calcium carbonate crystals I think.

Back from the vets, they've given him a 10 day course of baytril and they also gave him a metacam injection. If he gets another infection though it's an x-ray and possible operation to remove any stones. Totally panicked at that thought, none of my 6 have had any operations. I'd be petrified and then there's the risk of abcess afterwards and I've read how hard they can be to get rid of completely. Hoping the extra water and shilintong will keep it at bay. Struggling to find a stockist for the shilintong in the uk, I may have to order it from America which is a pain, it'll take ages to get here.
I have a quick question with the baytril, he's on 0.4mg a day, should I split it to 2 half doses twice a day or should I give him the full whack once a day with probiotics? He does get a bit of a dodgy tum with this stuff, not too bad just a few really squidgy, smelly poos.

Septrin is better for UTI and less likely to cause soft pellets. If you stay with the Baytril, split the dose into 0.2ml am and pm and give Bio Lapis.

I do not recommend the use of over the counter products for renal stones,in my experience they do not work.I have had pigs operated on for the removal of renal stones and have never had any post op complications. The pigs have lived for up to 3 years after the surgery.Their is no risk of abcess after lithotomy.

Hope he feels better soon :smitten: :smitten:
Get as much pro biotic into him as you can with the baytril, my piggy loved it so it was easy!

You could find out about a product called `uriflow`. I vaguely remember someone talking about using it with their guinea but obviously I wouldnt recommend just trying anything you are not sure of. Mention it to your vet perhaps and you could ask a rodentologist such as Vedra her opinion.

Hi Fiona,

Anne has looked into Uriflow as I suggested it as an option when one of my pigs had gravel.I had the impression she is not keen to use it.

Glad that Sunny is doing well, paws crossed he stays well.

Thats interesting Mary! I think I read about it being trialed on pigs prone to UTI`s but dont know if it did any good or not but I like to explore different options and find things out.

Thanks for your kind wishes to Sunny, another GP mystery that one!
