One of my boars has developed an impaction in his anal «pocket», but its made up of semen and hair. It is completely solid, and when i try to remove it how you’d normally remove a «poop impaction», it doesnt work well and is visibly painful for my pig.

does anyone have an idea as to what i can do to soften it? I haven’t tried using mineral oil yet, could that soften things up? I only used water.

i’ll have a vet do it if i can’t remove it myself of course.

I would book him in with the vet soon so he can get some relief. Have a look at the guide below to see did there are any other tips.

Please see a vet. Dried semen fluid is not called 'boar glue' for no reason. I am very sorry that his has ended up clogging up the opening of the anal sac. It may require sedation to remove it. :(

That’s what i was scared of, there aren’t many good vets in my area and i’m not a fan of sedation :(

Is there any chance that mineral oil could work? I’ve heard that olive oil can work for boar glue. I just want to be sure that i dont put him under anasthesia for no reason, thats the only type of sedation they use here and its very risky unfortunately

Boar glue is called that for a reason. It’s really best you get him seen. Are you able to travel further afield?

Please can you also add your location to your profile. It makes it easier to tailor advice that we can, without asking repeatedly. County/state or just country will do 🙂

I have read, but not tired, coconut oil, olive oil, vegetable oil or peanut butter can help loosen boar glue when it's directly on the skin. (So far I've only had to remove it from fur with scissors)
I use olive oil soaked Q-tips to do the anal pocket cleanings, because it's more comfortable for my boys than water. I also use it to loosen any crusts on their grease gland, and it works very well for that.
I just drip on a bit and let it sit for a few hours or overnight and it will allow me to carefully pick off any dried crusts that are stuck to their skin.
Someone else might have more experience, but might be worth a try since anesthesia is so risky, depending on how bad/urgent the impaction is. (Still should see a vet, I think, even if you can clear it, in case there is any injury or antibiotics needed)

I’ll try olive oil! The thing is, it’s not only boar glue. Its a mixture of semen, hair, fiber from bedding and grime / «unidentified grossness». Mostly hair. I’ve been able to remove some of it, that’s why i think i might be able to remove it with oil! My country is Norway and my city is Bergen, there are maybe two or three vets here that can treat common guinea pig problems. This is the second biggest city, and there are almost no vets outside of this city.

if the oil doesn’t work i will book an appointment with a vet immediately though, i would never let him walk around with this.

Please rather use coconut oil than mineral oil, as it should not be ingested. But while coconut oil can be use to work off grease gland crusts, dried semen is stuck directly to the skin and will take the skin with it until it comes off on its own.

So i won’t be able to get it out? I’ve already put olive oil up there so i guess i’ll find out if it did anything when i take a look at him tomorrow ^-^
