In this age of the internet, I hardly ever actually read the newspaper any more. I get a few of the free local ones through the door, but I now find I am buying a paper at the weekend, just so I have enough for the guinea pig hutch!

Is there anything else I could use instead? I use woodshavings and newspaper in the hutch, with hay in the sleeping area.

ha ha I'm glad I'm not the only nutter buying newspapers just for the piggies - i dont even read them lol

So I have recruited my friends, family and work collegues and set them up with big bags and then when I go visit them I collect all their newspapers.

So far so good

All my friends save newspapers for me .Perhaps yours would too.

same here! Haven't read a newspaper in forever. I do feel bad when I've accidentally put the obituaries section down in the run, though :(

* just reminded me of a conversation me and a friend had the other week.. we didnt want use the hillsborough section.. it seems direspectful doesnt it!..

I accidentally put the page 3 facing up yesterday which made the kids chuckle, especially when my rabbit moved all the hay away, to expose that section! lol x

mu mum works at a college whos library save me all their reference newspapers each month and so far i have never run out!

You could ask whoever delivers your free newspapers to leave you all the left overs. I used to deliver one of these and always had quie a few left over and would have been glad of a local house to take them to

well my piggy Boris cannot have any moisture whatsoever so i have to change his news paper up to 5 or 6 times a day and 10 changes of beddingmallethead.you can imagine how over loaded my washing machine is and how many papers i buy/steal from my family lol sometime i buy our capital citys paper only because it is alot more sheetsrolleyes i don't know what you could use that is really abosorbent that won't smell?/

I often wonder about if there is anything you could use instead of newspaper too. I would rather have a shed overflowing with newspapers than not have enough! I only use newspaper in the hay trays but I still find that can mean up to 2 papers a day!

My vet told me you can use puppy training pads, for soaking up moisture, and that they arent dangerous if ingested.. although i would suppose it would depend on the brand? cos i know my Ash would eat it! lol

Do you need to put paper down? my bunny Lara-Grayce is into ripping it up and moving it.. EVERYTIME! I LAY IT DOWN! she puts it into her sleeping compartment..I'm thinking either she doewnt like it there or she is having a phantom pregnancy? at least i hope its a phantom! lol

I have enough with just the newspapers from my parents saving them for me. Before I got them to save them, I was having to buy newspapers just for the piggies too! :))

yep I ask my sister, mum and grandma to save me some usually I have far too many but is great when I forget to collect them for a few weeks!

Thanks for all the replies! I'll see if I can get hold of some spare local papers, and maybe ask my in-laws to save their Daily Telegraphs for me :)

I find the Saturday Times is just the right size for the outside hutch but I have to be careful not to clean them out until hubby has read it, as he gets a bit miffed otherwise rolleyes

I can't believe someone changes bedding 10 times a day. Once a week is just fine for me.

Ha ha I have a habit of picking up the nearest paper to me and using it! I think I have used a couple of "job sections" I shouldn't and things that paul hasn't read yet. but my arguement is that if he doesn't tell me which ones he wants to keep and leaves papers laying around everywhere they become piggie litter :))

My sister works in an old people's home and she gets me their newspapers. You could ask your local old folks home to save you the papers.
Also, I get friends and family to save me their paper too.

My parents-in-law save their own newspapers for me. And then my mother-in-law gets papers from some people she works with. And one of my father-in-law's friends gets me a big box every so often from the people in his neighbourhood who save their papers for me. :))
