Hi I have a double decker hutch for my piggies upstairs I have shavings on the floor down stairs I was considering putting down sandpaper similar to the stuff you put on the floor of bird cages because I think this may help to keep their claws in good condition does anybody know if this is a good idea or not?

I can see what you're thinking but as above, the abrasive surface could damage/irritate your guinea's feet potentially leading to bumblefoot (pododermatitis). It'd be better to stay with soft beddings and invest in a pair of nail clippers designed for guineas.

Even sand paper in bird cages is not recommend now! When I kept budgies the budgie forum hated sand sheets because of hurting the birds feet!

Thank you all for these replies I will definitely not be using sandpaper, I already have the clippers but thought this might be a good idea! I am now thinking of using fleece with newspaper on the bottom and stay with the shavings on the top

Thanks again:agr:

I would use towels then two layers of fleece. It will last three days before washing.

Thank you I've got some fleece for them now:inn:

Thank you for posting this Eve.
I had bought some sandsheets with the same idea. I hadn't got round to using them and am so grateful I have found out how harmful they can be before I did.
Thank goodness for this forum and thank goodness people aren't afraid to ask questions like this.
