what other bedding apart from hay and straw can i use.

after problems with mites ect, i don't feel confidant anymore using straw ect, i have a bail in my shed which I'm going to get rid of as we found mice in our shed where my piggies straw is kept and my vet says the mites are more than likely from the mice.

what other alternative cheap methods of bedding are there, at the moment I'm shredding newspaper, but as you can imagine its not lasting more than two days

any advice would be great, thank you.

Hello have a look at the reference section http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=9

There are reviews of lots of alternative bedding materials which you can try.

They will still need hay to eat so you'll need to find a new home for that where the mice can't nibble it.

My piggies live indoors and I've tried lays of fleece, towels and newspaper worked well but am now using vet bed with newspaper underneath which I find even better.
These options cost more to start with but in the long run pay for themselves and make cleaning out a quick job.

Hope that helps :-)

Are your pigs living indoors or out? If indoors, you can try fleece, as Katiepops suggests. If they're outdoors, You could try a 'carefresh' type material, although it could work out quite expensive.

Or, maybe try a different source for your hay before you give up on it ;)

My pigs are housed on newspaper covered with hay and (touch wood, fingers crossed etc etc.) I've not had any mites. Could you maybe get a plastic box of some sort to keep the micies away from the hay?
