I have 14 piggies,6 girls who live in pairs but all go in the pen together,i also have 8 boys ranging from 7 weeks to 7 months they live in pairs i was wondering could the boys get on in the same pen? :-\
I currently have 5 boys who all live in the same cage. For the most part they get on, although a couple of them tolerate each other & that's about it! They like to teeth gnash & chase each other round the lounge on a regular basis!
;D
There is another discussion going on about castrating male pigs. I know some people do, especially if they want to house more than 2 pigs together. I don't & would avoid it at all costs - but that is my own personal opinion. However, this has led to some issues especially fighting & war wounds. I let them go through it whenever I get a new pig, because I think they need to reorganise their own pecking order. However, if a pig is getting picked on & suffering too many wounds & is becoming withdrawn, then I will separate for a couple of days.
I have found that they do settle down - up to 3 month's! But, for me it is worth it, as I have seem some wonderful relationships & friendships emerge from allowing the pigs to mix & find their own friends. :-*
As long as you know your pigs & trust in them & your instincts, you will know what to do with your piggies! :smitten:
messing around with the group can cause bonded pairs to become unbonded. i would leave as they are. O0 good luck with what you decide :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: i have heard piggies can fight to the death, so be careful O0
Agree with Mary putting unbonded pigs in the run with one another may cause the bonded pairs to fight I have 6 boars and they all live in pairs there is no way I would do it. 2 of my boys got out into another pen and they were never the same with one another, they are now seperated and live with a baby boar each!
i have sucessfully got two pairs of boys bonded as a 4 francis and sage two older boys and Avalon and Glastonbury two 5 month boys their is the odd rumble and chase ut nothing nasty and Francis is usually starting it! and he has cattarachs! keep an eye on them some times it can work
I have two sets of bonded boars and a lone boar... when my loan boar runs around the garden i have to keep him away from the other two boy runs as they go mad and turn on each other just by his presence!
My loan boar is a temp situation!
It is probably a case of if you don't try then you won't know.
But be on hand, preferably wearing a pair of sturdy gloves, just in case you have to intervene quickly.
They might be ok if the run is large.
Let us know what happens as it always depends on piggie personalities!
I tried bonding four boars together, and it didn't go well! Three of them got along but I ended up with one piggy who caused quite a lot of problems. Had fighting to the point where teeth were knocked out and fur flew! I wouldn't risk it after what happened with mine, but then again your piggies could be totally different to mine
i have 4 boys living togther there are 13months now and borthers, there older bother aflie who is 3 months older then them did live with them untill he decded to try and kill ruben (he never really lived ruben)
3 out of the 4 boys run around kicking biting pushing chattering their teeth but that how there play then there is ruben who teys to keep out of touble he is the sentive one,
but if i put them aprt there would miss each other
For my own experience with 2 boys that fought like crazy, i honestly feel if you are going to put them together you need to leave them together. They will soon work out who's boys and settle down. unless there is blood then thats a different story. I think that putting them together and splitting them again makes things worse
when i was a child we got pigs and knew nothing about them.we first got a adult male who wasnt castrated and then got two young males who were brothers.we put them in together and they were fine! then we were given another adult male who had been used for breeding and he went in with the others and no probs whatsoever.3yrs into it a friend brought babies and got sick of them so we took in two 6week old brothers and no problems whatsoever but they did have a huge cage.
