I know I’ve seen threads about these so I though I’d let you know that we took the plunge and bought an air purifier this week to try and help my OH’s airborne allergies to dust and *hay*. We live above a motorway and although we are double glazed downstairs and triple upstairs, the house is quite dusty. OH’s woodwork in the garage also creeps dust into the house and of course the pigs ‘create’ a lot of hay bits and dust etc.

Bought the Vax pure air 300 on Which’a recomendation and it’s really good. Not cheep. Not pretty! But it’s doing the job. It has a light that shows you how ‘bad’ the air is from green to yellow to red.
The medium and high fan settings are quite loud but low is perfectly acceptable in the same room whilst watching tv etc. On Auto it detects the quality of the air and changes the fan setting accordingly, which is amusing when it suddenly intakes a patch of bad air!

Too early to tell is it’s helping him but I’m very impressed so far!

Sounds good. Please can you let us know if it helps. My partner has asthma and COPD, we also have a lot of black greasy dust from traffic as well as piggy contamination.

OH did comment today that he feels the air is easier to breathe.
Will take a little while to get on top of it I think, particularly up stairs, but it’s looking promising

Turns out that my OH’s tight throat was nothing to do with the air quality or his allergy to hay! But we still use the purifier everyday as he does notice the difference it makes. It goes red and angry and turns on to full power when I clean out their downstairs pen or put new hay in! It is ‘not allowed’ in their upstairs room though as it would kill the filter. Fortunately he goes to work much earlier than me so it go’s in for a bit most mornings!

He went to the doctor a couple of weeks ago who had a gander down his throat and suspected acid reflux as his throat was all red and raw (hence the tightness and inability to swallow food sometimes) and he got some short-term pills to reduce the amount of acid his stomach produces and was sent off for an endoscopy which happened last week. Turns out he has a hiatus hernia which is forcing acid up his throat rather than producing too much. He is re-convening with his GP in the new year to discuss management/treatment options.
Not really want we wanted to hear but I’m glad we have answers.

I hope your OH can get some successful treatment quickly and that he feels better soon.
