We have 2 male guinea pigs who have been together since birth and were sold to us as brothers. They have always got on extremely well however one died yesterday, both myself and family are distraught as was completely unexpected. My question is what is the best option, to leave the remaining Pig on its own (it’s indoors and a massive part of family life) or try to introduce another male, but my concern is that they may not get on. Is another option a neutered female. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you I really don’t know what to do.

Definitly don't leave him single

Best option is to either find rescue that does guine apig dating and they can find one your pig gets along with, or get your boy neutered and find him a sow, but they still won't get along for sure. Spaying a female is only normally done for health issues, it's a far more expensive and invasive operation that's neutering a boar.

How old is your boar? Edit sorry you said 3. Good age to neuter, not too old

Thank you, any idea how to do the guinea pig dating, is there a way of narrowing down somewhere local to me I’m in Grantham in Lincolnshire, thank you for your help. I’m new to this so excuse me if I’m asking daft questions, once again Thank you

Hi and welcome

I am very sorry for you loss! Your are welcome to post a tribute to the boy you have lost in our Rainbow Bridge if you feel that would help you at any point.
Here are is our grieving information and resources for the whole family: Human Bereavement: Grieving, Coping and Support Links for Guinea Pig Owners and Their Children

Guinea pigs are never too old for company. But if you can let your boy choose who he wants to live with, then please take him rescue dating at a rescue that offers this service; it is by far the best option as you come home with a new friend only if acceptance has happened in 'speed dating/meet&greet' or stably bonded in residential or 'full' bonding over several days at the rescue. Unfortunately, not everybody has access to a good standard rescue with mandatory quarantine/vet care, proper sexing and bonding experience.

You may find these guides here helpful; they contain links to lists of recommended good standard rescues in several countries, tips on how you can do for your bereaved boy now and in the meantime, and what you need to look out for as well as tips on alternative options if you do not have good rescue access:
- Looking After a Bereaved Guinea Pig
- Single Guinea Pigs - Challenges and Responsibilities (includes challenges with and companionship tips for bereaved piggies)
- A Comprehensive Guide to Guinea Pig Boars (Boar specific companionship aspects)
- A Comprehensive Guide to Guinea Pig Boars

I hope that this helps you! There is not just one size fits all solution. A lot depends on your local options and availabilities.
We could help you better with recommendations if you please added your country, state/province or UK county to location in your account details (accessed via clicking on your username on the top bar), which makes it appear with every post you make and allows us tailor any advice straight away to what is available and relevant to you with just a quick glance to the left.
Otherwise we have to keep any information as general as possible as we are dealing with members and enquiries from literally all over the world and from very different conditions.
Thank you!

Welcome to the forum.
So sorry for your loss- be gentle with yourselves as you grieve.
I can only echo what others have said about finding a companion for your bereaved piggy.
Hope he can find a suitable friend soon

So sorry you lost one of your boys X
I am in the same predicament as you, I lost my Bill who was Ted’s brother of 5 weeks earlier this month. Due to the lack of guinea pig rescues in Cornwall and Devon we have decided under our vet’s acceptance to have him neutered next month, touch wood it will go well. Then Ted can have a lady after 6weeks
Hope it works out for your little man and he gets a new friend x

So sorry for your loss - I second going to Cavy Corner, my wonderful Peanut came from there after he was bonded with my Little after losing his brother. Sue, the owner, is so dedicated to her work and spent hours bonding the two pigs despite being under the weather herself. It was a great pairing too, the boys are a great match for one another. Bonding two pigs together properly is vital and so should be done by someone who really knows what their doing in order to achieve the best match. Definitely don’t leave him alone! I know travelling can be a pain, but if you go to Cavy Corner with him and he successfully find a friend you’ll know the two pigs really do want to live together, the bonding process is thorough and so if done right this should be guaranteed.

I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s so good that you are making plans for your surviving piggy. Cavy Corner gets many votes on here. They do an amazing job of dating single piggies to help them find a companion. I do hope you are soon sorted.

Whoops! Should have said 5 years not 5 weeks together! ☹️

So sorry for your loss,I had to seperate my 2 boys because one was bullying the other...I got them a baby each and now they are both happy, not the advice others have given but it worked for me😊
Sending hugs😘🌈

Another vote for Cavy Corner here, who took in my pair of boars when I had to sadly give them up due to circumstances way out of my control. Sue's lovely, very patient, and they do a lot of lone guinea pig bonding, that sort of experience is hard to find. Good luck with whatever you decide
