Pinky & Perky's Mum

Hi everyone

I know there are a lot of posts on here with people asking for advice on runs but wondered what you think of these and whether they would be suitable.

I have two guineas...Pinky and Perky who are about six months old now and want to get them a run for the summer months. They live in a cage in our living room so want them to be able to have a run around in the garden during the nice weather.

I have seen the following...

...but am really unsure what is best for them so would welcome any advice and thoughts.

Thank you in advance.

Hello. If you're not going to be out there with them then you need a run that's strong enough to keep out inquisitive cats, birds (raptors). It MUST have a top.

If you will be out there with them then the top is less important, but you do have to be out there all the time. I have the first tall wire one, with an elastic netting top, which is ok as no cat will try to jump onto it. They have the shelter inside to hide in. The disadvantage is that it is a pain to get out and put away. I also have a wooden hutch (covered part and run) which I have removed the bottom from so that it sits straight onto the lawn. They are safe in there, they have shelter and I can safely leave them. I can also move it easily so that each day they get a different oblong of the lawn to eat! I must admit I don't leave them out too long though, a few hours at most as they are indoor piggies.

Hope this helps a bit,

Sarah x

I will be outside with them when they are in there, I wouldn't like to leave them outside alone as we have one neighbour with a cat and another with a dog and although I have never seen them get into our garden, I wouldn't like to take the risk.
I only really want to put them out for an hour or so and sit in the garden with them so that it is a change of scenery for them and and they can enjoy the grass when the weather is ok.

In that case can you get a big enough run so that you can sit in there too? Sit on the grass in the shade with a cool drink? It would be lovely, sitting with your piggies, having them climb over your legs, maybe reading a magazine or just getting to know them better. I know, I've done this. (We do have two of those tall wire ones, so it was in a BIG enclosure!) I can recommend it though, it was marvellous fun!

That sounds great, do you mean you used two to make a big one or you just bought a really big one?

We ended up buying two of the big wire ones. I have no idea what would suit your garden - our wire run went around the cherry tree - but you'd need space to sit in it too and shade as well. A shorter wire run is actually fine for piggies if you're out there with them, we just bought the tall one because it was on offer at the time!
