Hi everyone!

Having read a few threads recently ive decided to try puppy pads as bedding. The shavings get everywhere and I'm aware there can be health implications.

I plan to do a layer of newspaper then puppy pads then hay. My question is do i need to layer the puppy pads or does one suffice in terms of absorbency?

I have read on here that B&M and Home Bargains are the best to get them from but i dont have either near me :( Does anyone know if anywhere online delivers at a decent price?

TIA, cant wait to change from woodshavings!

Hiya, I use fleece and puppy pads. I don't know how long they would last ... With fleece I change the main bedroom puppy pads every two-three days but I do have five in one pen and they pee... A lot...

I use two types - square and rectangle

Must admit so easy to clean up though :)

Hi, I use just one layer of puppy pads with no newspaper underneath. Although in a smaller cage I found I preferred to change them every couple of days as they got soaked through so maybe a layer of newspaper would help, although if doing that I'd probably just use the newspaper and forget the puppy pads!

I buy my puppy pads from Amazon, I buy in bulk so is expensive at the time of purchase but lasts longer, I bought a pack of 240 which lasted me about 9months with a huge cage to line!

This is the pack I bought and got on really well with:
And this is the pack I've just bought, technically due to the size I should save a little bit on these but I'm dubious whether they'll be as good as the old ones were - have yet to try them out!

I'm using 2 layers of newspaper, 1 layer of puppy pads and a good sprinkle of hay so the poo drops through and they cant get it stuck to thier foot bottom so easily.

I have just switched from fitch to puppy pads in the bedroom. I thought the fitch might be a bit too snug in this warm weather and they were starting to get pongy so I wanted to try a different method to see if it would help. I have 2 piggies and clean them out every 3 days. I use one puppy pad with a generous layer of hay that I top up each day and I don't use any newspaper. By 3 days there is no smell (seriously! I was amazed) and no leakage. I will probs go back to fitch in the winter because I think it is warmer but I am a total convert at the moment. I use the B&M pads.

I have found that the B&M puppy pads are the most absorbent. I put one in their hideaway in their pen, cover with a layer of Auboise and then a pile of hay. Tilly always wee's in the hideaway, unfortunately.

I also have a pad under the hideaway as Hettie wee's there.

Also i trim away most of the extra blue/white plastic bits around the wee pads to avoid my piggies from eating it. They tend to dig up the pen and if they get to the wee pad and expose the plastic they will chew it up!

I'm making the switch this afternoon, so excited! I'm biting the bullet and getting them near me... They are expensive in the shop but i really want to get on with it lol! Then as long as i get on with them i will order from amazon as you lovely people have recommended :)

My boys have recently figured out their ramp after being here 3 months so I'm really excited about that too! I have to line it with a towel though or they struggle and scrabble x

Thanks for this thread, it has given me yet another option in terms of c&c bedding! As the new cage will be going in one part of my bedroom that I have made specifically for my guinea pigs, I want it to be as clean and smell-free as possible. Would this work:
Line the cage with a double layer of newspaper, then a single layer of puppy pads, followed by fleece on top. I will have a large litter tray full of newspaper and hay to allow them to burrow and hopefully if I cover it with fleece and make it dark they'll do their business in there and not in the nice new cozies I've bought them! Haha wishful thinking maybe?!
Does anyone have any ideas on how to separate the hay part from the fleece part of the cage? Thanks :)

Sounds like a good bedding option to me :) ive never considered fleece as i have 2 preschoolers and sooo much washing already lol! Not sure about separating sections but hopefully someone will be along to advise :)

I started off using the Poundworld puppy nappies as they were only 5 for £1 (7 for £1 when on special offer). I use them in my C and C set ups. It's a good way to start without paying too much out to see if you find them suitable for you and the guinea pigs. As my 4 are all males I tend to do a clean out every 2 days. If the nappies aren't soiled they can be reused. I put newspaper on top and hay. I use a cat litter tray for eating hay and I also have a wooden hay holder that I bought from P@H. That way the hay they eat keeps fresher. You could use cheap hay for the bedding and better hay for their food.

Could you use straw rather than hay for the bedding or is that no good?
Straw is a lot more course than hay and from what I have read can cause serious injuries if it pokes the piggies in their eyes. Everything i've read says to stick with hay :)
