Hiya! So unfortunately my piggies have mites :( now I know I shouldn’t have listened to the vet, but we were seeing an exotic vet earlier in the year and I spoke to her about what preventives I should use for them and she advised nothing at all and to only intervene if symptoms began to show. Up until now we’ve been very lucky. I know a lot of owners may think I shouldn’t have listened to her, but I was doing what I thought was right at the time and listening to an exotic vet that I trusted and has helped me with my piggies for a long time.
Anways I just need some advice, I know they have mites and I think they must have picked it up from one of the pet shop hays we were using whilst we waited for our HayBox order to arrive. I will of course bath then, disinfect their c and c cage and wash everything, but what brands are best? Is beaphar ivermectin ok to use? My big worry is what if they clean soon after, there’s no way of stopping a pig from cleaning, and I didn’t think it was safe for them to ingest surely?
I’ve heard someone say there’s an oral ivermectin, is this better to use?
And finally, one of my piggies honey has a small scab under her chin (from a healing sebaceous cyst) it’s not open just a small scab, is it still going to be safe to apply ivermectin as I know we wouldn’t give topical treatments when an animal has had a break in the skin-but I’m sure all these piggies that end up with hair loss and scabbing on the skin end up being given mite treatment?
Apologies for the long message. I’m a very worried pet owner haha and don’t have anyone to relate to or ask about this around me. Thank you x

Hi

The advice from your exotics vet is exactly the same you'll get on here. Treat with vet quality products (NOT from a pet shop) whenever there is a real need instead of promoting resistancy with low dosed pet shop products that cannot fend off a real attack nor can they get on top of it.

PS: It has taken us some digging around to work out the dosage of pet shop 'vet strength' invermectin. It is a lot lower than what vets treat with. Please speak to your vet.

New piggy problems: URI - ringworm - skin parasites

:agr: The advice here is the same - dont use preventatives and instead only treat an active case.
Using a low dosed pet shop preventative such as Beaphar can cause it’s own problems and make treating an active case much harder.

As the Beaphar product is so low dosed it certainly wont cure an active case. Please see a vet and get a prescription strength product and use it as per a proper course to treat the active case. Dont bath them until you have spoken with your vet (doing so can cause issues with being able to make a diagnosis).

Once the treatment for the active case is over, dont be tempted to use a preventative going forward.

Hello I’m treating my two for mites at the moment. My advice is see the vet for a proper diagnosis. The treatment is relatively cheap and easy to use. You’ll probably need three treatments per piggy spaced two weeks apart.

Thank you for all your replies guys! I’m fortunate that I actually work in a vet hospital so will speak to a vet tomorrow-wierdly enough we never see smallies for parasites so I’ve just never come across it. I am worried about the small scab though, I hope we can still apply the treatment as The skin isn’t open. X

The girls have had their treatment tonight. We are using xeno and are having to measure out the xeno liquid using a syringe as the xeno 50’s are out of stock. And boy it’s a pain syringing it up🥴looking forward to them being back in stock for the repeated doses in two weeks because I certainly won’t be weight out again!

That does sound like a pain. I’m always given xeno450 for my boys anyway. But then they are quite heavy. 😃
