Hello, I have 2 new sows who have just turned 4. Their names are Fudge and Coco.

The guinea pig I wanted to seek advice about is Fudge who is crested guinea pig. I noticed a few weeks ago she seemed a lot more quiet and staying in certain spots for longer than she used too. She is still eating her greens and squeaking for them and I notice her eating her nuggets and hay still. However, she started to feel very very thin and boney. I took her to the vets a few days ago and everything was checking off nicely but they said they could feel a small “mass” near her abdomen or in that area. They tried doing an ultrasound but said she was too fidgety and wriggly and would need to give her a bit of gas and without the ultrasound there would be no chance of diagnosing further. The vet I saw didn’t seem to know much about guinea pigs and recommended she referred me to a specialist and got me some quotes first. The prices were absolutely extortionate. 200 pounds for a consultation just to look at her and around 460 for an ultrasound and blood sample, maybe more. Then depending the situation it could be a further 250-1000 pounds on treatment

I had a good hard think about it and rang around a few other vets in which I am getting a second opinion tomorrow who have quoted me 48 for consultation and being a small animal 30-50 for the ultrasound and depending on what they see they would want to take a sample of the lump and send to labs which is a further 150 odd. I liked the sound of this better and will be seeing them tomorrow.

The vets I initially saw said being a sow it’s likely it could be ovarian cyst, but would that be in that area? They have put her on metacam for 7 days and I have been monitoring her and giving her metatone tonic 0.5 daily of my own accord. She hasn’t lost anymore weight perhaps very marginally put some on, but not much and this could be due to her having a full bladder or what have you. I don’t know what your thoughts are and what you think is best? She does drink a lot of water and has been for a while now so not sure if that’s something related also.

Many thanks for your time

I am very sorry for the position you are in.
A mass in the abdomen is unlikely to be an ovarian cyst as these are felt on the ovaries unless your vet has been mistaken. The mass may or may not be cancerous but I would have the ultrasound done and take it from there. Given costs, I would see the cheaper vet too. £460 for an ultrasound and blood work is extortionate. I think I only paid £40 for an ultrasound at my vet and they charge £36 for a consultation. Having said that, specialists are more expensive and you’re paying for their expertise

Good luck x

Are you near Northampton? They have a very good vet there.

Good luck at the vets I hope it’s something easily treatable. 🤞🏻

Just a quick update that I made a mistake in my initial post and previous threads I made around 3 years ago were related to the same guinea pigs I have now! Time has gone far too quick!…my bad!

Unfortunately not, I’m more South West

I’m south west too. Wiltshire. I travelled two hours each way with Pepper last year to the Cat and Rabbit vet in Northampton. They truly are amazing.

Many thanks for your reply, she’s off to the vets again this afternoon for a second opinion. Are lumps common in the abdomen? Does anyone else here have any experience with them?

I'm afaid I have no idea but I'm hoping your vet was mistaken and that it is a ovarian cyst.

Good luck at the vets and please let us know how you get on x

I’m sorry I haven’t got any experience of this. Good luck at the vets.
