Hiya,

We're looking to build our wiggles a new home and need some advice on sizes etc. Custom build cages are rather new to us so not sure quite how to go about it, and it looks like we've been making a lot of mistakes in keeping our pigs before.

The newest boys are only about 5 months old but previous to that, I had a single boar (he had to be on his own for vet and rescue specified reasons) who lived very happily in a dog cage, lined with cardboard at the bottom to stop bedding falling out and two tiers - he'd hop up onto his plastic house and then onto a second large (1 1/2 ft square) feeding platform about 9 inches off the ground. He was very happy with this arrangement, was a talkative and lively guinea pig and lived to be 8/9 years old. We kept him on straw (I get it free from work) and never had a single respiratory problem with it, and he never had scratches or eye problems so I wasn't aware I shouldn't be keeping him on it.

We've now got the two boys in the same environment (on straw, no problems at all so I'm unsure whether to change it or not) - we initially took the platform out as they'd never seen one before, but they spent a lot of time hopping onto the top of their houses so we put it back in and they love it, use both equally and seem very happy. However from everything I've just read, I shouldn't be using two tiers as a way of giving them more room, but just as a hay loft? However they are happy, content, noisy and lovable boys so I'm not seeing any signs that I'm doing this wrong?

Anyway, we want to build them a custom home but we have a limited amount of floor space (very small house) and so want to make a C&C cage with two levels, similar to their arrangement now but more customized, but not sure how to build the two levels and make it safe for them. It also has to be fully enclosed as we have cats. All I'm reading says I've been caring for the wiggles wrong for the last eight+ years so at a bit of a loss as to where to go from here.
