My guinea pigs are scratching a lot and constantly itching. I checked them over and I saw white, almost clear insects, so I have a strong feeling its definitely lice. I was wondering if “Advantage Flea & Tick Dog & Puppy Shampoo” would be safe for them? I don’t want to have to wait for something to be shipped, as it would take a few days, and I hate to see my guinea pigs suffer already.

No, don’t use this. Such dog/cat flea products can be fatal to guinea pigs.

Please see a vet and have the correct ivermectin treatment prescribed and dosed based on their weights.

:agr:
Dog products are not safe at all for guinea pigs.
They need to be prescribed the correct, species appropraiate treatment by a vet.
The advantage is they may have it onsite so you can take it home and address the problem right away.

When my guinea pigs had lice, I called the vet and told them that, got an appointment, and showed the vet the lice. It was a quick appointment and the vet was able to prescribe them with an appropriate ivermectin dose. They got their first dose at the appointment. It's weight based, and you'll need a vet to give you the correct strength and instructions for your piggy. Do not try to treat the lice yourself, as it may hinder how well the vet can assess and treat the infestation.

This is what lice infested guinea pig hair looks like. Poor piggies. I gave them their first dose of ivermectin on friday, and its definitely showing improvement. I’m seeing less and less lice now and they aren’t itching as much, but I’ve seen a lot of eggs. I'm giving them their second dose on sunday.

I’ve been really ashamed to say this, but on friday, whilst I was giving them their Ivermectin treatments, my mom was over and she was a veterinarian’s assistant and shes way more experienced with this stuff more than I am, but I pulled up their needed dosages and my mom assisted me. I felt like something was off with the dosage we were giving to my first piggy, as it looked way more than a drop, but my mom assured me it was fine. I still felt something was off and it wasn’t until right after she put it on her, that she realized it said “.035mL” and not “0.35mL”. I IMMEDIATELY panicked and rushed her to the sink, and began washing her off. Luckily, most of it got onto her fur, and not her skin directly. I remember falling asleep next to their cage that night and waking up panicking, worried I wake up to a dead piggy, but she was perfectly fine. I watched her throught the days and she was perfectly fine.

Goes to show that I can be an idiot sometimes and to always trust my gut and double check the dosage numbers, before administering it. I feel so bad about it still, but my mom insists its her fault, and she feels awful about it as well. I feel like the worst parent ever right now and honestly I’m just glad shes okay

update!

Piggies are feeling so much better. Although, I gave them a little area to exercise in more now because I unfortunately didn’t have the options to do that earlier, but they dont seem to want to use it very much. Anyways, I haven’t seen them scratch for a day or so, other than a few seconds, but they never went back to that spot and started biting at it, so thats a good sign!
