A friend of a friend wants to rehome her 2 piggies. I have 2 boars at the moment, living indoors in quite a large set up. Is it possible to add 2 piggies or would the boys be unlikely to get on with newcomers? My piggies would be around age 2 and a half and have been together since birth. It was only mentioned in passing today. I don't even know what sex the piggies are yet but hopefully should find out more tomorrow.

I feel as if its not fair to potentially upset my existing piggies but I would love to give these 2 a forever home.

Could you house the boars separately? With boars two work best. It would be a shame to have your pair fall out.

Boars are best kept in pairs; trios and quartets are particularly unstable. Don't break what is working well when it comes to boars. At the worst, you can end up with four single piggies that won't want to go back with anyboar else!

Any sows would need to be kept out of sight and ideally reach of pheromones from your boys, i.e. ideally a little distance away or underneath. At the least, they will need an opaque divider in order to not upset your boys.

Thanks, my head was telling me that, but my heart was saying take the other piggies! Bearing in mind what you've said about boars/sows, I think I'd rather keep the two lots completely separate but my only option for that is a hutch that could go in my shed, but my rabbits live in the shed so I'm not keen on that either. At the moment, the boys are free range in a corridor that I can't really put cages in as there are cupboard doors all the way along getting in the way! I don't think it will adapt to 2 separate areas.

I think I just need to hope that these piggies get another good home. Thanks for the advice

You could direct your friend yo the forum so she knows what to look for in a new home.A large hutch in the shed would be find if you could give them separate run time

Is there not a danger of something being passed on from one to the other? (bordatella/pasturella)? They would definitely be separate, not mixed, but if they sniffed each other through the bars of the hutch would that be safe? They could definitely have separate run time. My hutch is 6' x 3'

There shouldn't be a problem
as long as they are not living together.

Thanks Wiebke, that was my only concern with them going in the shed. These piggies look like they're a possibility then ...... :yahoo:
