Hi I'm new to this forum and need some advice.

Last August I bought 2 boars from the pet shop. No idea how old they were at the time but they weren't that small. In March I had no choice but to rehome one of them as the bullying got to a point were blood was being drawn. Since March my one boar has been living alone. I would like to add another piggy because he seems so lonely. I dont know what to do. Should I get him neutered and get a girl or should I try another boar? Older or younger?

I really dont want to be in a position where I'll have to rehome one of them again, it was so upsetting. I kept the one that was getting bullied, not the bully. I know the cage is plenty big enough for two pigs.

Thank you all for reading

Hi Stacey

Your right - either option you are toying with.

Either choice a good vet that has done Boar neutering many times before and have your boy neutered than wait 6 weeks before introducing him to a sow or sows.

Or get your boy a male friend, the best idea is to choose a baby or a older boar around 2 years old.

This is the important bit - What ever you decide, to cut down your stress of having another fall out get in touch with a Guinea pig rescue and ask them to help you date your piggie, that way he can pick his own friend - by doing this you will get complete support and back up from the rescue, if anything happens in the future, the rescue will take the piggie back.
If you go down the neuter route it is still important to boar date with sows as much as it would be to boar date with another boar. With piggies it is down to personalities if they get on.

Unfortuneatley by going to a pet store the piggies didnt choose their own house mate, and the 2 boars would be going through the dreaded hormonal stage together I guess which means a bigger chance there would be a fall out.
If you decide to boar date with another boar, by choosing an older boy helps because the older one has been through the stroppy teenage stage, initially a very young boy about 8 weeks old could also be introduced but at about 4 months he will go through the hormonal stage too - However this is just a rough guide as piggies do bond well because personalities match.

Let us know where you are and we will be able to list reputable guinea pig dating services

OOh now then, that's a bit away from most places :))

What I would do is look at the pros and cons of what you want to do

By taking the neutering route and finding a sow can work out to be a very stable relationship, you can have one or more sows living with your little man. But you put your boar through the risk of an operation.

By finding another boar can work well too, given the right combination of personalities. Boars work the best as a pair.

Why don't you post a thread in 'guinea pig chat section' as there are normaly more viewings - or the rescue wanted section once you have a better idea which way you want to go I'm sure you'll find different but valid views and other peoples experiences.
Either way I'm sure we'll be able to find your lonely boy a friend -
OH BY THE WAY....
WHAT'S HIS NAME :o AND WE WOULD LIKE PIGTURES TOO x) :))

Hi there, I'm mid Wales, I had a horse come from your way so you're about 2 1/2 hours from me as far as I remember. If you'd like to bring him for bonding you'd be welcome to.
