Hello there, my friend had two girl piggies that are now 2 and a half years old.. but one of them unfortunately passed away a few months ago. The one that is left is coming to live with me now as her son is too upset to look after her. I do have lots of time as i work from home but still think she is going to be lonely.. is there a way i could introduce a younger female & have them live together?- or is this going to cause fights?

Thanks

The best way to find a new friend for your piggy-to-be is by letting her choose her new friend herself in a rescue that allows you to bring your piggy with you. Go for the piggy where there is instant interest and "chemistry" even if it is not the prettiest piggy available. Thankfully, age is not that much of an issue with sows as it is with boars.

I have done this twice with great success, once by bonding two three year old "widows" and once by bonding a 3 1/2 year old lady with a 12 month old neutered boar. Both have been very loving relationships.

Here is a list of reputable guinea pig rescues where you will also get advice and support. It is worth ringing round a bit to ask what kind of animals are in (most rescues have more animals than on their website) and where you are allowed to bring your piggy with you - not all rescues do. Start with the rescue that has the biggest choice of potential mates available.

Alternatively, you can post in our "rescue - wanted" section (please state your area) so that any rescue active on here that is within your reach can contact you.

We also give advice on introductions etc., but you may find a lot of info geared towards new owners in our "reference" section as well as at the head of each section in the "care" section. You can always ask any questions you may have!
