Hi everyone! I was wondering if adding a second floor to my C&C guinea pig cage is necessary.

I have three guinea pigs in a 5x4 C&C cage.

Any information would help! Thanks!

Might be hard to get in to clean, alot of people add lofts, just like a second level but only small

If you want, I'm sure your pigs would appreciate it!

I have 3 cages. Two pairs of females and one pair of boys. They all had a loft area. The girls love it. The boys not so much. My boys used to have a 3 by 5 c cage with a 1 by 3 loft. I expanded it to two by 3 loft. It was very hard to clean under it. I eventually tore it down because they didn't use it much. I instead made the cage longer. It is now 3 by 8. They love the extra space to run. My girls still have a 1 by 3 loft and love it.

I have a loft too, and it works well. It was great at the beginning, since I have two boars and the youngest one would run up to the loft when the dominant one chased him. They have been using it now to exercise. They run up and down all day.

Both my cages have a loft my two skinnies have a 2 x 1 and my trio have a 2 x 2, I use them as the area to keep their hay and they all seem to like using them and it keeps the majority of the hay in one place.

Some of my piggies have loved having a loft and others have never used it.
And then there was the piggy who ran up the ramp and scared herself silly and couldn't get back down
If you have the space and the grids you could always pop one up and see what they make of it.

In terms of your exact question, no adding a loft is not necessary. It doesn’t count as extra space (piggies being ground roaming, even in smaller cages than yours, a loft still doesn’t make the cage bigger) and your cage is already a fantastic size.
If you want to add one then that bit of separate area can be useful, provided your piggies will use the ramp.

Billy (above) and ChickChick (below) live in the 'luxury portable housing module' that all our ten little buggers babies dwell in here at Dindy Towers aka GPMHQ.
The hay loft is an essential part of the habitat. It keeps hay contained and provides a seperate area for a piggy to go and be alone if it wants. There is also a twisty of hay in the general living area as standard.
