My piggies live in a shop-bought cage. Its a fair size, but I would like to add some changes to keep my piggies happy and exercised when I'm at work.

Its just a one-level layout for now. Id love to add a mezzanine level to it, and thought of buying a cat litter tray, cutting a piece of of the size for access, and then somehow tying it the bars, perhaps with cable ties if I drilled holes in the litter tray, but would this hold? How else could I hold it up at that level without it falling under the weight of two hefty boars? :(|) I am going to use the wooden logs you can get that are wired, so you can bend them and shape them how you like, as ladders and tie them on to the mezzanine somehow.

Does anyone else have any ideas of how I can provide piggie toys and stimulation for them for as cheap as possible?

Thanks.

I made an upper level for my shop bought cage. I got 2 thin, but sturdy strips of wood a few inches wider than the cage and put them through the bars so they were resting about 6 inches apart, and sticking out and inch or so either side. Tied them to the bars with string and then balanced a cardboard box on the top. Used a piece of guttering as a ramp, with a piece of carpet to line it so the piggies could climb up.

brown paper bags and kitchen roll tubes filled with hay (cut down the middle of the tube so they don't get stuck though!)

I used to have a shop bought cage and i made a mezzanine level with a paper sorting tray it was like a really tight mesh on the base that had no risk of piggy feets slipping in, plus the sides where just bars so they were easy to cable tie in, worked quite well so thats another idea other than a cat little tray. Like willow, i have guttering as a ramp with carpet inside :)

I agree that paper bags and toilet roll tubes are some of the cheapest and best toys. another thing is little children's stools, piggies love zooming in and out of them. Also hanging toilet roll tubes with hay in from the top of the cage gives them something they have to work towards a little more.

Tunnels, tunnels ours love tunnels!

I made a extra level for my diva girls cage. The girls cage is a Ferplast 120. I used 2 grids to make the loft attached by good old cable ties and binder clips to make it easier to clean under. The ramp is a cat scratching pad I found on zooplus

My how to guide.
