Hi all...

Trying to find an Acceptable Daily green that our boys will eat. We have an especially fussy pig who has turned his nose up at: Cabbage, Basil, Parsley, Spring Greens... He will only accept Kale or spinach, but we know these shouldn't be fed daily, and other suggestions on what we could try him with?

Butterhead lettuce, little gem lettuce, red and green lettuce, basil, romaine lettuce (not every day and sparingly), round lettuce, dandelion salad (dried from a packet) you can grow carrot top greens (but mine are taking a while) or if you get carrots with greens already on then, they can eat that and celery leaves.

Is your pig quite new @BenjiAndButtons ? They can be very reluctant to try new things. We need to be persistent and offer it over and over, wasting quite a bit of veg before they eventually try it.

One of my boys only ever carrot for weeks after I got him. I wasted a lot of veg but eventually he tried a few different things.

Sometimes they're more willing to eat things if hand it to them directly.

Sometimes they can be so fickle too. My late Pedro used to love certain veg, then for no apparent reason, would suddenly go off it for a little while (few days) Even though he had a varied diet. Depended what mood he was in sometimes. Funny little animals . Like @Jaycey says, perseverance is key x

Mine like chicory and cucumber as well as pretty much everything else.
Like human children piggies soon learn what they like or don’t like

My pigs didn't like pepper to start with but they had no choice but to eat it haha. They love it now!

It can be hard to get them to eat new things but I genuinely find that eating a piece of veg in front of them encourages them to eat it. It's how I go my Bella to eat peppers and once she did the other pigs wanted what she had! :))

I prefer to go for a low calcium type diet and in any diet I find lots of hay, safe weeds and plenty of grass is key! :)

Thanks for all the replies. I heard that lettuce was bad for pigs and it was a misconception that they can have it.

And no the piggie in question is 3 years old and has been with us his whole life, he's just a stubborn little piggie, if its not cucumber, kale, spinach, pepper, tomatoe or carrot then he doesn't want to know.

I have noticed they can be fickle, they jusy decide they've had enough of something for a few week, i suppose us humans are the same! Ha, its odd aswell because our other 2 piggies dont care much for Cucumber and will eat any leafs, but this one is fussy! Always has been.

For a really rare treat, like every couple of months I will give my two radish leaves and they absolutely love them or if i can't find radishes with leaves attached I will give them celery leaves.
