My 2 year old female had an op on Friday to Lance an bases on her right cheek - not connected to her teeth but while she was under vet noticed overgrown molar so filed it down. She hasn’t eaten or drank on her own since and we are now on luquid food prescribed and we are mixing pellets with water and syringing water into her and offering veg but she has no interest at all. She is taking anti biotics , pain meds and meds for her stomach as she isn’t pooping. I am worried vet may say she needs to be out to sleep at her check up on Friday which no one wants if she isn’t eating and drinking by then ! Any advice to get her interested great fully received !

I’m sorry for your situation,
I assume she was eating ok before this vet did her dental work? If so, then it’s possible the dental work didn’t need to be done and unfortunately a dental done incorrectly can make a situation worse.
I can only strongly advise you to find another vet. If at all possible can you get to Simon at Cat and Rabbit Clinic in Northampton. He is simply the best guinea pig vet in the country when it comes to piggy teeth and he could sort this out. It may be a journey for you, but we have many members from all over the country who just go to him for his expertise. Theres no reason to assume your piggy needs to be put to sleep.

Please switch to weighing her daily so you can ensure she is getting enough syringe feed each day.

Thankyou for reply - yes before this she ate everything . They said the tooth was sharp and pushing into her tongue , my thoughts are she is on a lot of medication and is being constantly syringe fed after surgery and tooth procedure not sure I would feel like it ! Just worried as she isn’t pooping either probably because she isn’t eating enough. I don’t think we can do anymore 😖 that is really far from where we are there aren’t any anywhere near us . So far this has cost £450 which I don’t mind paying I don’t want her to suffer just feel a bit helpless !

It’s vital they eat straight after surgery, and while not eating much for themselves for a little while after due to the effects of the anaesthetic is normal, you would hope to be seeing some improvement after a few days. A dental not being done properly can have a longer effect on their ability to eat. It’s just a possibility but something we see reasonably often

Has she been given a gut stimulant? I’m assuming thats the meds for her stomach you mention.

What are the meds and the dosages she is being given?

Is she being given pain medication twice a day? Being in pain will also stop them from wanting to eat and piggies metabolise pain meds quickly.

Is she on a probiotic? Antibiotics can upset their tummies and cause reduction in appetite, and giving a probiotic such as Pro C or Fibreplex can help combat.

Not pooping means her system isnt functioning properly due to lack of food intake. How much syringe feed are you getting into her in a 24 hour period?

Are you weighing her daily?

She is on loxicom - 0.34 ml once a day , baytril 0.68ml once a day, emeprid 0.4ml three times a day ( stomach stimulant ) , then one sachet mixed with 100 ml of water over the day - she isn’t keen on that either so we are doing 10ml per time until it’s gone , only started lunch yesterday so today will be first full day - yesterday she weighed 700g today she is 751g. We are now weighing her daily - offering hay too but she won’t touch that either - vet said the wound is healing well and no obvious sign for her not to be eating ( other than the obvious )

Once a day pain meds isn’t enough for guinea pigs. They metabolise in 12 hours so pain meds can need to be given twice a day to keep on top of it

I would also try giving a probiotic - you need to give it either an hour before or an an hour after the antibiotic dose. You can get them from pet shops.

Poop output is 1-2 days behind so if she had surgery on Friday but wasnt syringe fed until yesterday then that will explain it. If she gets a good amount of syringe feed into her (you’re aiming for 90ml in a 24 hour period) then the poops will come and hopefully her system will start working better. Feed as much as she will take at each sitting, it will mean little and often and at ideally once during the night.

I would personally just get a second opinion before doing anything like PTS. Hopefully its just that she is not quite feeing better from the surgery than that will come if she can get her system functioning and pain is being managed, if it turns out to be an incorrectly done dental, then that can hopefully be solved. It's just something we see - a vet with more experience of rabbit teeth than piggy teeth does a piggy dental and can make things worse because the two are different so its something we mention.
Is your vet a cavy savvy vet? Perhaps see if they are on our vet locator list. If not, then perhaps there is one you can go to.

Took her back to vets yesterday morning we were leaving her in for the day for drip as vet thought she had a temp unfortunately an hour later she had a huge seizure and passed away 😖 vets now think she had a gut problem as well as her teeth issues 😖
