My GP has a abscess on the side of here neck. I have spoken to the vet and she suggest surgery. The cost is apparently £307.99, is this normal? Also I have heard the surgery may not work or could be fatal is this true?
All surgery carries a risk. But this is less if the vet is experienced. If your vet isn’t experienced in treating guinea pigs then you’re within your rights to take your piggy elsewhere. I hope he’s sorted soon. Recommended Guinea Pig Vets
Vet costs vary massively too. My regular vet is a lot cheaper than the nearest specialist but then you are paying for the expertise there (and my regular vets are great at referring patients there when it's outside their comfort zone). Another thing that will impact on the cost is the complexity of the surgery. I had a boar with a really small abscess on his neck a few years back but unfortunately this was nestled between two blood vessels. My usual vet would have done the surgery but the location made them very nervous and they felt they wouldn't get it all out on the basis of its location so we went to the specialist. Basically what I'm saying is it's not as straight forward as saying that price is expensive or cheap or just right for abscess surgery as there are other factors to consider
While the general operation risk has massively improved over the last decade and much more complex surgical procedures are now possible for guinea pigs, there is no such thing as a 100% guarantee. Prices for operations can vary massively depending on the vet you are using and the service you are getting.
The last two ops of piggies of mine (removal of a badly wedged urethral stone and an eye removal in April) have both been in the same league as your estimate. Both piggies have made a full recovery, by the way.
Unfortunately, buying a piggy is the cheapest part of it all.
