Hello,
Our 5 year old sow Pie has developed a large abscess on her face. We took her to vets4pets Newmarket as they were recommended by our vet as a Guinea specialist. They've drained the lump to release some of the pressure as she was struggling with eating.
We've been booked in for marsupialisation surgery and xrays on Tuesday but the cost is... a lot. The vets there seemed very knowledgeable and friendly. We're happy to pay whatever it takes to make her better, but I also don't want to be paying over the odds! We've been quoted in the region of £1000 for the surgery, swabs and xrays (as we're concerned it might be related to her teeth), does this sound about right?
Thanks for your help.
Helen and Pie x

I think cost will vary between vets. I’ve no experience of abscesses so can’t tell you if the quote is reasonable or not. Have you tried contacting other vets to see how much they would charge?

To be honest we have been struggling to find an exotics vet that is actually taking on new clients in our area (we live in Huntingdon). I think that as this is a specialist branch of a chain their prices are somewhat higher, which I can cope with, if the price is at least in the same ball park and not, say, doubled. I think I'm just trying to justify the cost to myself to be honest 😅

I just though I'd post an update on the absess removal.
The vets at New Market Vets4Pets did an amazing job, but unfortunately two surgeries was just too much for our old lady 'Pie'. The team were really knowledgeable and happy to speak to us about any questions or concerns we had. Pie had seemed to be recovering and improving, but she had lost a lot of weight and despite our best efforts she passed in her sleep.
Thanks for your help in getting the best care for our baby.
