Hi all hope everyone had a good x-mas

We picked up a soe for our elvis from a rescue but was never told about this abscess under her chin, one night they was both playing and we noticed something off and checked her and there was a 2cm lump, due to it being after 11 PM we had no choice but to ring black vets, closed to us (yes i know but white cross vets did not answer and i know with how bad BV are) we got her checked and it was a abscess and and to take her back in the morning to be drained, we took her and only a bit of gunk came out, we had antibiotics and hoped that was the end of it, we took her up at the 7 day check but said it needs removing (this was after i had to drain some out as it was about to pop but still had a lot in it that would not come out) we've had a invoice to have it removed at 418$ after having a good luck this price is over the top for a 1cm abscess with a lite anaesthesia.

Is this right as now due to me questioning the price they have made out they gave the wrong bill and my wife got a ride reply of " so what with the price is high you need it removed anyway"

White cross vets say they can't have her in but no reason why.

Your best bet is to call around and see what other vets may say. It can vary from one to the other and it’s better to get a proper quote. I have no clue whether the price is high or not.
Vet Locator

PS remove the postcode part from your location 🙂

Hi i did look on the locator and only rose at white cross vets and sally vets4pets near by. I've read up and for her size, weight its a 89$ max on price which really is confusing.

I would say as edit button gone, we have rang WCV and they are not taking any appointments.

Manor vets have Sergio (think he's in Edgbaston?) who specialises in exotics and there's another vet who's not exotic specialist, but good with small pets and price is lower.
Then there's Amicus who's also exotics.
You'll have to call and check for quotes.

White Cross vets haven't taken any new patients since beginning of lockdown, I've tried few times.
I was told vets4pets in Stourbridge is good and some local rescues do take boar and bunny neuter there. But never used them myself.
You should get in touch with rescue you had her from and discuss your options. Many rescues know vets who give discounts to rescues.
Unfortunately, cheapest quote doesn't mean the best and always check what's included. If it's just surgery and no meds or check ups then cost will add up. Naturally, exotic specialist will charge more.

You’ve been given a good idea above actually. Contact rescues and see if they can recommend a vet. Which rescue did you get her from? You may also need to contact those a little further out.
Rescue Locator

We have phoned sally for a check up at walsall vet4pet that is on the locator and when we told her the price she nearly had a heart attack so some off with the price for sure. the rescue was Coseley Guinea Pig Rescue and Sanctuary and my wife asked but can't remember what she said as she could also be pregnant (which i'm hoping not to be as it was 8 weeks till we got her)

Was she born at the rescue or brought in as a pup? If you know when she may have last been with a boar then you can at least know. But it’s all a waiting game I’m afraid.

From what my wife was told, her and her sister was dumped on her doorstep and there was a male with all the girls but he was neutered she said but not sure when which was strange as shes leaking milk and the vet seen it and told my wife to phone her asking about the boy. She was fed horse hay which the vet said could of been how she got the abscess.

I have no experience with abscesses so can’t confirm or deny whether horse hay can cause abscesses.

I hope you can get her seen soon.

Horse hay will not cause an abscess.
Most of the hay our guinea pigs eat is exactly the same as the hay fed to horses, just sold in smaller quantities (and for a higher price!).
Many members on here with multiple piggies will buy hay in bales intended for horses.
Hay is hay (different cuts and compositions obviously) and most hay is suitable for all animals - it's jus the packing and quantities that differ.

Oh OK. Makes sense. Never heard of it! My local country store has two types of hay, one for lifestock which is a bit thicker and one for small pets.

I was thinking the same but it also seems the vet did not know much to be honest as they tend to cats/dogs and the vet hannah who knows her piggy stuff was busy. She seemed to be the runt as she had dry skin on her rump and after looking closer small scabs which after a nice bath have cleared up. we still have her hay she came with as we was told to stop giving it her as it was the problem.

I think you should speak to Reta directly and resolve this. I know she puts girls on pregnancy watch if needed and looking at pictures from her FB rescue page hay doesn't look like a straw. It's best to get all the info and speak to the rescue rather than assume. I know she had huge influx of piggies again, but if you maybe drop her a message that way she could tell her side of story and resolve this?

There are no complaints to resolve, we was told as much as she knows health wise.

I’m a bit confused, sorry.
How long have you had this sow?
When did you find the abscess and was it a dental abscess or one from a bite or an injury? Where was it?
have you had the surgery to remove the abscess and that was the invoice for having done it or was that an estimate for having it done and you haven’t had it done yet?
If that is the Bill for consultation, antibiotics and surgery under general anaesthesia, that is about what I would expect to pay at my vets.

I know this isn't dollars but as a comparison. I've had bills in the region of £300 for a mammary tumour removal and £500 for bladder stone removals if that helps.

We have had her for nearly 2 weeks, we noticed extra saggy skin under her chin from the 3rd day having her as she was very shy, we took her to black vets after noticing it (was after hours) and they said it was a abscess so we had some pain killers and antibiotics the next day (the vet tried to drain it but not much came out of it) we massage it as told by the vet. we had her 2rd check up on it an they said it would need removing as it has now become solid but has gone smaller.

We was not told what abscess it was but we told him we was not told of any health problems when taking her and asked what hay she has and we said we was giving her the horse hay we was given and he said it could be due to the hay has caused it as horse hay is more sharper and to give her the hay we give our boy.

It was a invoice of what it would cost to remove it but after questioning the amount (we don't mind paying it) we have now been told it was quoted wrong so now we have to wait for a new quote but i have a check up at another vets above said above and she was shocked on the price.

I see you're from the UK. Are you American as you're quoting the prices in dollars? I agree its worth ringing around vets to see if they can do it cheaper but it's always best going with an experienced vet x

OK. As long as you're happy with the support as it came across as if she's given you girl who might be pregnant and had health issue caused by being fed wrong type of hay?
I just want to ensure that's been solved and you know she did her pregnancy watch days, was healthy on adoption and the rescue isn't using some illness inducing hay.
Rescues rely on their reputation and so it's important to clarified if it's just bad assumption from a vet and that rescue was contacted to resolve the issue.

All the best and hope your piggie is well soon!

I've talked to reta and is fine, We are all still learning so i was not sure if horse hay was the problem but it seems it was not. She has told me a few vets to try and i've been told this is a good price if they are sending it off to get tested.
