My 4.5 year old boar Bertie has an abscess either in his reproductive glands or urethra. I first noticed the lump a couple of weeks ago and the vet was able to flush out the pus via his willy poor chap 😢 He was prescribed Septrin for 2 weeks and it shrank but it has sadly come back with a vengeance and he is now back at the vet. They are going to try first to drain conscious with mild sedative/pain relief but I’ve been warned they may need to resort to anaesthetic and surgical removal which is not ideal at his age.

Does anyone have experience of abscesses in this area and if so how was it treated? It’s in a tricky location for me to access (and painful for him) and am worried about reoccurrence.

I don't have any experience of an abscess in this particular area, but wanted to offer support.
4.5 years old is really not that old to be having surgery. so it is great he is being seen by the vet for further treatment.
Hopefully they will be able to tremolo the whole capsule and avoid the need for further flushing at home.
I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

I thought I’d update this thread just in case a future piggie has an abscess in similar spot. After the first abscess drain, Bertie had a day trip to the vet for his second abscess drain so they could sedate him and thoroughly clean out. He was also switched from Septrin to Marbocyl, Gabapentin and Metacam. Unfortunately he had an unexpectedly bad reaction to the buprenorphine and was on critical care for several days. As he bounced back, so did the pesky abscess 😢. I agreed with the vet not to opt for surgery. The third drain was less invasive so no sedation with much less pus and he was prescribed metronidazole (Eradia) alongside Marbocyl and Metacam. It’s been a week on this cocktail of antibiotics and pain relief and it’s greatly reduced since mid March when first noticed. He’s still far from out of the woods but 🤞. He’s being a very tolerant patient having his boy bits thoroughly inspected every day.

Also, so far on our vet visits we’ve met 2 rats going for a pedicure🐭, 2 dental Guinea pigs, a goose🪿, a parrot (we kept well away) and a very handsome tortoise 🐢
