I haven’t really introduced myself. I’m not new to the forum, but I’m just going to say a little about my piggies.

I have two female piggies, Pearl and Zip. Both are four years old. Though it has been four months, they still haven’t settled who’s dominant.

After several mistakes, I finally was able to make this fabric hidey for the piggies. They LOVE it. They now refuse to use the pigloo, and they’re always fighting over the “special” hidey.

One piggy sits in the cloth hidey and the other just waits outside for her turn (if she’s in a patient mood — otherwise she chutters and acts dominant). So, the pigloo is useless now.

I think I am now a cavy slave. They are forcing me to make more and more cloth hideys!

They currently are living in a pet store cage with six square feet. I have two piggies. We got them a 10.5 square foot cage, but we needed a stand for it. I found one on Craigslist for $10, but one person I’m living with insists that there will be no furniture in the house worth $10. So, we’re building our own stand. It will have a filtration system so that the pigs won’t stink. So far, it’s costing over $300, but the person who wanted to build it is paying for it, not me!

Anyways, the cage stand is taking a long time to build because of work, which takes up most of our time. :( We’re hoping to finish it by February!

Our pigs have been in that small cage waayyy too long. One of our piggies died in that cage (7 years) and probably never got to experience larger cages (we don’t know for sure though, because she was adopted). One of my piggies has been in that cage for three years, and the other for four months.

Once we’re done with the cage stand, the new cage will have fleece bedding instead of paper bedding. If they love the cloth hideys now (which aren’t fleece!), I’m sure they’ll LOVE the cage liner!

In the photos Pearl is in the pigloo (finally, they’re actually using it!) and Zip is in the cloth hidey. They are chuttering at each other, acting dominant.

Your piggies are very sweet and I like your fabric hidey and so must the piggies if they fight over it.

I feel like a terrible pig owner now! The cage stand is taking way too long! I’m not in control of how long it’s taking. If I was, I’d buy a stand and get the pigs into the cage ASAP. But it’s not up to me.

What can I do for them? I’m putting them in a 4’ by 4’ run four times a week, a few hours per day. I might be able to put them in the run 5 days a week, too.

They’re current cage is 6 square feet, the same amount the ferplast 120 is. And people on the forum have been recommending that cage.

Get sewing another fabric hide! Much cosier than plastic hides!
I’m sure that you’re doing your best and will have them in the new set up soon!

Finally!

We got them in yesterday.

It took 5 months to build.

The cream colored one (Pearl) was in the small cage for 3 years.

The white one (Zip) was in it for 5 months.

So they were used to the old cage. The transition was difficult. They were very scared, and still are recovering. We kept the cage lay out similar to hopefully minimize the horror. They’ll get fleece bedding soon. They are still learning how to put their front paws on the bars. Pearl tried it this morning when she was given a treat, but only managed to put a paw on the coroplast, looking confused.

That looks great, plenty of room for them to run about in! I'm hoping to to move my 2 from a ferplast 120 to a C&C before very long - got the grids, need to find the time to organise the base and fleecy liners.
Just a suggestion if yours are still a bit nervous in their new spacious quarters - how about covering a corner or end so they have something to hide under - fleece forests seem to be quite popular? :tu:

We’re planning to add a fleece forest when we add the loft (we haven’t started building it, just thinking about it). The fleece forest would probably hang down from the loft.

Or I could just attempt to build a fleece forest out of random materials I find right now...

Betsy how about putting a corner shelf in and hanging from that?

Good idea liking that ..... teensy problem is nobody here much good at DIY. If I mention it to the OH the reaction will be "I 'ate DIY" and I wouldn't know where to start!

I use string a lot in my cages. How about using the little screw in hooks that are used for hanging net curtains. You could tie a piece of string between two and then hang the fleece.

Or if you didn't want to damage the back and sides of the hutch with screw holes you could try stick on hooks instead?

Orrrr put a low box with fleece forest over it or a pound shop plastic stool ...

OMG Ji gle and Mistle were so cuuute as babies

Love improvisation. I'm trying to figure out how to fix a fleece forest in the hutch. Any ideas?
Or how about supergluing some velcro to the roof and sewing matching pieces to the edge of your fleece forest?

Hope your piggies are enjoying their improv fleece forest @Dog Cow !

I changed the fleece forest and substituted the zip ties for cord.

I made it slightly bigger, too.

They actually aren’t doing anything with it! I hid some treats inside, so they ate those, but otherwise they don’t seem interested.
