Hello,
I have a skinny pig who had 2 abcess at her ear and her cheek bone, she went in to have them drained and flushed and I assumed they would be left open to drain but they weren't. She was given baytril for one week. When I picked her up I could see the abcess was developing on her chin and a couple weeks later it was huge so back to the vets today, she had it drained under sedation but again its not left open. She was given no antibiotics as it "won't help" even though I suggested zithromax as read this is better for abcesses. Am I right to be annoyed at this? Surely giving her antibiotics will reduce the risk of infection reoccurring?

Hello. How cavy savvy is your vet? You are right and Zithromax is the preferred antibiotic for abscess’s. It is also recommended that the wound is left open so it can be flushed and heal from the inside out. If your current vet won’t do this and won’t even prescribe antibiotics, I would definitely seek a second opinion from a different vet

Sadly I live on an island in the outer hebrides and only have one vet practice. My only other option would be an hours drive then a 3 hour ferry then a 3 hour drive to a vet on the mainland. To be honest it may come to that! I think next week I will phone and speak to the practice owner. It has been the same vet that has dealt with piggy twice now and she is useless, couldn't even give me an answer as to why the wound wouldn't be left open and today they did her under light sedation and gave her no painkillers. Thankfully I have metacam at home as she is obviously sore.

Oh no, yes you are right to be annoyed - she should be on antibiotics and definitely painkillers.
I hope you get on well speaking with the practice owner/travelling to a different vet.
Keep us posted

Managed to get an appt with the practice owner on Monday morning so hopefully I will make progress then

Hope that goes well.
You might find it helpful to write a list of the reasons you are unhappy, and what you believe should have been done.
This will help you to remember everything and to be very clear about your concerns.
