Just wondered if anyones piggy has had an operation to remove an abcess?Piggy Spice has been to the vets and to the CCT but still this abcess won"t go away. The vet suggested today to surgically remove it.I"m rather concerned about the aneasthetic. Will the abcess burst naturally if left alone?Poor piggy has been pulled about so much and the abcess doesn"t seem to bother him,I don"t know what to do for the best.Any help would be appreciated.

I have a piggy who had surgery on a large abscess in her ear. Because of its positioning we opted for removal as it would have been a nightmare to treat if it had burst. Over a year later she is doing fine and it hasn't reappeared. Bear in mind that if it bursts it needs to be watched constantly and kept clean and drained - such open wounds are vulnerable to infection. Where abouts is the abscess?

Anaesthetics used now (isoflurane or sevoflurane) are safe and quick for piggies though, as with any animals including humans, there are risks involved.

The abcess is in the join on his hind leg, hope that makes sense. Its rather large and the vet did wonder if it will pop soon.I have another appointment in two weeks but will go sooner if things change,
