Hi, I'm new to this forum and have thought until now my ferplast 100 cage was ok for my 2 piggies. Looking through everyone's posts I'm now beginning to think otherwise. They get floor time for about 4-5hours, longer on my days off, but I now think they may need a bigger cage. We didn't get on well with fleece and have gone back to sawdust (dust extracted) so I'm not sure if a c&c cage would work. Any advice on cage sizes/options would be great, unfortunately money is a bit tight but I want to do my best for my piggies xx

Hello :) I would recommend a c&c cage. They provide lots of room, the option for expansion, and are generally cheaper than commercial cages. I am unfamiliar with how big the Ferplast is because we don't have it over here in the US. But I'm sure someone else will advise too. Oh and welcome!

Do you use sawdust with yours? The ferplast 100 is 100cm long but looking at it now seems tiny and I'm reluctant to put them back in

Best save up for a while until you can afford the kind of cage you want; your piggies will keep until then! There are now C&C grid cages, which are very flexible/extendable size-wise; many of us have them (me included).

If you prefer traditional 120cm cages, this place here usually has the best bargains: http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/small_pets/hutches_cages/guinea_pig_cages
I would recommend the ferplast over the maxi skyline, as it is much easier to access for picking up piggies and cleaning.

As to beddings, there is a range of new products on the market, which some members who have trialled them can tell you more about.

I would recommend CC just because you can make any size/shape/level cage you want and its far cheaper than commercial pet shop cages which barely fit the minimum recommended cage size.

I use paper shredding in mine and it can get messy when the pigs run and popcorn as the stuff flies around so I imagine sawdust would be far worse but you could put a border around the cage. My two at the top have a border and theirs doesn't fly out. :)

With c&c you can use wood shavings fine the only issue is the exposed correx which seems to be cat nip for piggies they like to chew edges. You can easily remedy this by buying some binder clips or plastic strips from DIY stores to put over edges of the plastic. I use aubiose in my c&c which is similar to shavings but made from hemp and I have no issues as base is essentially same as a shop cage.

Thank you everyone for your replies, I'm searching on the b&q website but not sure what I'm searching for? Could someone post a link to the best place to buy from
Cheers x

There are some quite cheap 120s on Amazon, or you could look at Ebay or buy second hand? I will be needing an indoor cage for winter as my piggies are currently outside and i dont have a shed

Hi there, dont panic :) could you attach your run that you use for floor time to the cage so they can use the ferplast as a base and hop in and out?

I was just thinking I could bring their outdoor run inside and cable tie it to their cage for the time being. Going to go to b&q today and have a look at building something x

I had pumpkin and boo in a ferplast 100 with an 8 sided metal play pen attached for a while and they loved the space and jumping in and out!

It's lovely that you are looking to provide a better environment for your piggies. Do you mean sawdust or actually wood shavings?

Dust-extracted wood shavings are fine providing the correx base in a C & C is deep enough to contain them. They are not to be confused with fine sawdust which is completely inappropriate as this can irritate a piggies respiratory system (the grains are small enough to get "sniffed up" the nostrils and also get stuck in the eyes)

All my piggie pairs are now indoors pigs in Savic 120cm cages on dust-extracted wood shavings.

Having tried fleece/megasorb/auboise etc, I have finally accepted that since brining my pigs indoors, my carpets etc will never be spotless again as no matter how careful I am, hay and shavings are easily tracked through the house!

I would love to put all my pigs in C & C but because I am in a flood risk area I prefer to have all cages raised at least 12" above floor level and have found the Savic cages are the best ones to fit the mobile shelves I have bought for the purpose.

x

Hi, I do mean wood shavings, not sawdust and they are dust extracted (I've just got into the habit of calling it sawdust). I've decided I won't stop worrying about them so have contacted a company that makes c&c cages and provides everything I need. Hopefully will have a 5x2 cage by the end of the week. God my pigs are so spoiled :own:

I would look Into binder clips etc for top of the correx box before you put them in as cages dont come with these i got mine from staples.
