Hello, i’ve had my guinea pig for over 4 years now and today we’ve noticed a what is about 2/2 1/2 inch long and feels like bone or tooth thing growing out of his lower jaw/neck area, does anyone know what this could possibly be?

Hallo and :wel: to the forum!

That sounds quite an unusual problem. Does it feel like tooth, and are his front teeth normal as far as you can see? A photo might help , if you can get one of it.

Last year there was a similar unusual case, of a tooth growing out a piggie's nostril, have a look at this thread. Peanut’s very unusual problem If it is a tooth, then I believe the Cat & Rabbit Clinic in Northampton would be your best bet to deal with it, if you can get there .
Good luck in sorting whatever it is!

please do have your piggy seen by a vet
keep us posted. I hope he is ok

Hi and welcome!

Teeth can occasionally grow in unusual directions and - as they are nor ground down by the very abrasive silica in normal hay chewing - can grow quite quickly to considerable length. They require operative removal. Please have him seen by a vet promptly!

All the best!

Please accept that without an hands-on examination we can only ever guess and that our guesses can only ever be as good as the information you are providing us with.
PS: It sill looks like a tooth to me that is growing the wrong way.

unfortunately the vet said in her 25 years of experience she’s never seen anything quite like it, they believe it’s attached to the molars and it could happen to all of them so the best solution is to sadly say goodbye

Are you able to get a second opinion at all? It seems a little...heavy handed. I’m sorry you didn’t get any answers.

:(
It's true that teeth growing in strange directions is extremely rare, even Simon Maddock at the Cat & Rabbit Clinic, who does more guinea pig dentistry in a month than most vets do in a lifetime, has only seen that kind of thing a couple of times. However that doesn't necessarily mean it has to be terminal. If you haven't already said goodbye to him, It may be possible for it to be removed, as the tooth was in the thread I linked previously. Maybe as it is a long way for you to travel on spec, your vet could speak to Simon Maddock and see whether he thinks it's worth trying.

Oh, I'm sorry... I wonder if it's a tooth root that has grown out from under the jawbone and come through the skin? I have heard of such things but have never seen it. I'm not sure what you've decided, but you've gotten some links to dental experts for a second opinion above. ((HUGS)) to you and your piggy.

Okey, I can understand that maybe she is shocked but it´s very inaccurate to say that it could happen to all molars. Dental disease makes your guinea pig more prone to overgrowth but it doesn´t mean that all of them have to overgrow or grow like this one. My point is that if it's a tooth it could be removed with more or less risk (it depends on another factors) and if another tooth overgrow could be file down or even treat with higer fiber diet or things to chew. It will be extremely rare that it grow also that way.
Overgrowth is not a problem by itself, it leads to infeccions and anorexia, but if you piggy is healthy and is thriving, keep on and consider surgery before it turns worse.
I would recommend you to see another vet if you can...
Hugs and best wishes to you and you piggy from Spain.

I would definitely recommend a trip to see Simon Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit Clinic in Northampton. No referrals necessary and he is your man for anything dental, the best! If your piggie is happy and coping then there is no need to have her PTS until you know all the alternatives. We have a dental piggie and we travel from Cornwall, yes it’s a long journey but it’s worth every mile. Simon does do phone consultations at the moment too, perhaps you could ring and send them a photo, he may be very interested to help x

Oh no! I really hope the little guy hasn't been put to sleep already. The vet who saw our piggy, Peanut, before he was signed over to us, said euthanasia was the only option and it was only because I spotted the sad post on Facebook, that I stepped in to say we would take him. Simon removed the tooth, that was growing out through his nostril and it has never grown back. Peanut was adopted by one of our charity trustees and almost a year on is living a great life. If a decision hasn't already been made, please get your piggy seen by Simon Maddock, or at least speak with him on the phone.
