I was talking to some friends this morning and they mentioned theres a shop 3 doors away from them that is empty, and why didnt we open it as a pet shop

soo i went and had a look,it needs alterations etc and other stuff sorting, but the hubby suggested it would be a good idea to look into opening it as one as there isnt one local to that area

its gonna need a hellava lot of paperwork, research and money, but I also suggested to Hils that we run it together with Sars too,it would be an ideal oppertunity to think about doing..

not sell majorly big stuff ,just things like food etc and as its on a bus route near town that people pass everyday they would see it and pop in for a few bits

what do you lot think?

WOW, yes i think that would be a great opportunity for you lot. Good luck!

Ooh that sounds like a great idea! But it will be lots of hard work i imagine. Good luck with it if you decide to go ahead. O0

well ive got some ideas etc and we're prepared to do hard work, and def make it work, ive gotta have a long talk with Hils/the hubby/Sars etc
but i was shocked when the hubby suggested looking into it :o :o

Thats a great idea as you 3 would know more than most what people are looking for. Would you sell animals too? The OH once said it would be nice to have a pet shop, but I said I would get too attached to the little furballs!

I def think that one would be up to you & Sars ;D ! I wouldn't be able to sell the little furries! Anyone coming in would be given a proper grilling - told they're not good enough & sent away!

I had an idea ages ago to set up pens such as the ones you would find animals in but instead of real furries put a tv in there showing pics of all available animals at rescues. Would make people think about not getting impulse pets....

I dont think id sell furries etc as we already are against pet shops in a way,but then we would be sorta better at it for knowing more than p@h etc i guess

and put a board up with posters from various rescues on for rehoming unwanted animals

What I've noticed is that the actual animals are often not that expensive (esp hammies) but they make the money on selling the expensive cages and accessories. Do you think you need tho that the animals are needed to entice the customers in?

I think its a great idea - I have a shop in germany - i sell british animal feed - i have a wholesaler in the UK i can give you the contact info for - their prices are very good - you can buy heatpads from them too ;)

if you don't try it you will never know, i think it is a wonderful idea!

Still think you should go for it :) If it goes wrong, atleast you can say you tried it ;) Maybe the best idea would be to not sell animals? (not saying you should or shouldn't, just what we'd do) Good luck O0

I think it's a great idea! Has anyone noticed in their town that small pet shops are closing down, probably due to superstores like pets@home and internet shopping? Thats not meant to put you off, but if you can offer say bulk size bags of bedding, hay and so on and a delivery service for an extra charge, that could be worth thinking about. Also offer advice on looking after certain pets that you are experienced in..e.g piggies! The idea of advertising animals that need re-homing is a super idea!

you could sell your stuff by internet to ;D sounds a great idea but would involve alot of work

maybe you could adopt animals from rescues and the rspca and sell them... that way they get a home... or even if you just get them to bring a few animals down every so often for an open, addoption day ? that would be great! *I'm getting ideas here ;D*

Shaz i've already said to you as long as you get support, i think you should make a go of it, but it's totally up to you and how you feel :)

What ever happens you'll have plenty of online support, and hopefully some of the lovely people can frequent your shop as well :) :)
i can't too far for my shopping day :( :(

Without a doubt :) :-*

Look into the licencing issues. I assume you won't be selling animals but as far as I know, all pet shops need to be licenced by the local authority as the managers need to hold a certificate in Pet Store Management (a City and Guilds qualification). I don't think this applies to pet shops without animals but best to look into it.

We wouldnt sell animals

Hi great idea- there isnt many good pet shops out there.
I wanted to specialise in natural guinea pig stuff so when i looked into renting a shop i knew i wouldnt be able to reach enough guinea pig people so wouldnt cover the costs so i set up pampered piggies online instead.
But i did do alot of reserch into opening a shop and i did work in the pet trade for a while (6yrs) so i have lots of wholeseller contacts if you want to do dog/cat stuff as well
If you want some advice on buying from wholesellers or info on insurances etc do email me and ill help where i can.

But good luck!
And the rescue info in store is a great idea! why sell animals when there is so many that need homes already.
Sally, molly and the gang x
