I`ve just heard one of my piggies `sing` like a canary. Its 10. 30 pm and its wet outside but they are warm and snug in their hutch. There are seven sow sisters with mum. The lovely sound only lasted for a minute or so. I was lucky to hear and see it happening on my CCTV baby monitor. I read about this some time ago and apparently its very rare.

Does anyone have any information on this - have you heard it too?

I've heard it once in the early hours of the morning from a piggy i took in from freecycle - it's hauntingly beautiful.

I've never heard it from any of mine :(

Some say it is a piggy who is stressed others say one who is happy :)

yeah a couple of mine do it :D

I feel sure Hollly isnt stressed because she has seven sisters and a mum for company and they all get along great. They have plenty of space with a two decker massive hutch linked to two interconnecting grassy runs.

Therefore, I can only assume its a happy sound. Perhaps its a mating call to the bores housed at the other end of the garden.

I agree it is a very haunting sound because it happened on a very wet night - she was whistling / churping quite loudly too. It was as sweet as a nightingale.

I`ll try and record it next time for the forum but I`m sure she`ll stop as soon as i open the door and walk towards her.

Twinkle done it when Cuzzy was going over to the bridge. It felt like he was gathering the herd together to say Goodbye. Sunshine looked terrified! But it was lovely, I just love Twinkle he is so intune with whats going on! :smitten:

Not sure how relevant this is... but a couple of books i have read say that if a guinea pig appears to 'sing', you should remove it from the cage until it has stopped... not sure why that is! but i have never heard mine do it so far as i am aware... hmm... if your other piggies were not stressed out by it then it cant be a bad thing!

Bless the piggies... x :smitten:

From my quick research on the singing its so rare that no-one seems to know what its about. I`ve read that its a sign of an impending death in the herd but I`m sure this is an `old fish wives tale`.

(No ageist and genger offense meant).

I like to think its a mating call. :smitten: I`ll try and record it for the site if it happens again.

Well that old fish wives tale would be right in my case. :) As Twinkle was doing it when Cuzzy was passing away. :'(

DOesn't Peter Gurney mention it at the end of one of his books? He said all the other pigs freeze when they hear it. Would love to hear it, none of mine have ever done it!

Thanx for the `youtube` sketch SunshineAndTwinkle.

It was similar to the sound Holly made last night. I still think its a mating sound just like birds in springtime. :smitten:

Well, I`vie done some more experiments since two nights ago. I made an audio copy on my mobile fone from my CCTV monitor of the `bird singing noise` from Holly. I played it back at dusk tonite and WOW. :embarassed:

Its definitely is NOT a mating call. The poor little things were terrified. They scurried off into the run pipes and are still there 15 minutes later as I write this.

I think it is such a rare warning signal of impending danger for the herd they take it seriously.

Needless to say I will not play it again - poor little darlings. They are still in the pipes hiding - they never hide in there so they are really terrified. I feel so guilty for giving them such a fright. :'(

Yeah I have read this in the guineapiglopedia

It is very rare and I bet it's a treat to hear

Sunny done it once and it was amazing...dont know about a mating call as I only have boars and nothing else unusual was going on at the time. All the others stood stock still while it went on though, I would love to hear it again :smitten:

Looking at that video, the poor pig chirruping looked scared to me! I hope that's just a part of their main enclosure as well cos it looked tiny in there!

It's funny isn't it some pigs will be terrified. Sunshine was as I said. You could be right about the warning idea.

I do agree Fi that the little one looked frightened. Also when Twinkle did it I didn't see him I just heard him Peter was seeing to Cuzzy I was too upset to see him like that. :'(

Yet i know people that have had their piggies do the chirruping and there's been no deaths or anything else..... it's like it's a song they just have to do :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
I've heard a few piggies do it, i've been priveleged to have their recordings sent to me and it's so melodic :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: it's totally awesome :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

I watched the you tube clip and my computer is right next to my pigs and apart from the youngest one looking up alertly for a second they didn't react to it at all :)

just watched the youtuube clip, my piggies didn't bother one bitxxx

One of my girls, Chloe, does it every couple of months. The first time we heard it we were filing some wood to make a ramp for them and my husband thought I was making fun of him and trying to imitate the filing sound. :)

Three of my girls stop doing whatever they are doing whenever Chloe starts singing, but Keleigh couldn't care less.

Chloe is certainly the more musical of them all. She enjoys listening to certain types of music. :) I've got a Tibetan chant CD which she absolutely loves!
