Right I think I have this right :)) A pair of guinea-pigs should have a 4footx2foot hutch, right? So do they need access to a run at all times? Or would an hour or so of supervised time in a run a day be okay?

Yep that's right for two piggies. :)

It'd be good for them to have access to a run all day, but not neccessary.

An hour of supervised run time would be fine. But if you got a run that is safe enough then they could have a few more hours of run time a day. I think 4 hours is a good amount. :)

There's a wood framed run on zooplus.co.uk for about £42 and it's very strong and should be safe for them to be in unsupervised. :)

Thats brilliant, thank you :)

Ill peg it down too, I just worry because one of my piggies once was left for a little bit and the next door neighbours dog flew over our fence and got at her :( We've since built 6foot fences, still get nervous though!

Aw no, I'm so sorry, that's awful. :(

Hopefully that will keep the dog out, it should. If you feel too scared to let them out for longer though, then one hour supervised time would be fine for them.

If you're interested, here is a link to the runs I have. I have dogs and cats too, and there's no way they'd get in. Maybe a big dog could knock it over though if they really tried . . . but they are pretty heavy.

There are other wooden framed ones too, that would be just as strong.

That sounds a fine size. An hour or two would be OK, but they always appreciate as much as you can give them. :)

Sorry about you losing your piggy to a dog :( that's horrible.

Yes I agree, it sounds fine. I have a wooden run and my guineas play out in it every day (weather providing) and have done for the 5 years of their lives! :) I always leave them in it unsupervised because I know it's safe. ;) They are in it for about 12 hours every day! However, it is not attached to their hutch.

Another alternative is a poultry run. These tend to be a bit sturdier as you don't supervise chickens 24/7. I have an 8x3 ft triangular chicken ark which I use as my pigs run. They have about 5x3ft of grass & then 3x3ft of covered space with a floor which they can access via a sliding hatch. It weighs a ton so there's no way a dog can move it (my dog tried as she thinks their poo is delicious (yuck)). I've also put hasp latches on the doors which I padlock so I can leave them unsupervised. They go out in it all day & then come back into their hutch at night (unless it's pelting down). They've got some good ones on e-bay at the mo. xx
