Just over a year ago I got my two Guinea Pigs. I was told they were both female at the store but I was 99% sure one was male. Everyone I know (including one vet who seems to have vanished) thought they were both female (they were very young Piggles in all fairness). Today the one I suspected to be male took it's second trip to the vets where we discovered it was actually male.

They've both lived together for around a year and three months with no issue. Obviously there's a very good chance I end up with a pregnant Guinea Pig... I'm just surprised it hasn't happened yet. Should I do something about either of them and if so what?

(Sorry if this is in the wrong place, not entirely sure where to put it).

You need to get the male neutered, otherwise you will end up with a pregnant female at some point.

Have you had them both checked as they might both be boys?

I've had a vet which we have used for years and trust see them both at different points. I've been told one is female and, now, one is male. I'll get the male neutered then. Thanks for the advice.

I'd get both of them to the trusted vet to have a good look and confirm once and for all. I must say I am amazed if you have a male and a female that you are not snowed under with guineas, as to have been together that long with no litters. That being said if you do have a he and a she, still get him neutered to be on the safe side!

Hello and welcome to the forum. You can post clear pictures of their piggy bits into the Pregnancy, Babycare and Sexing section and some of the more experienced forum members may be able to settle the debate. I only have boys, so I'm not great with lady bits! If they are a mixed pair, they will either need to be separated or the male neutered to guarantee no offspring. Just be aware that a neutered male isn't 'safe' to go back with his lady friend until 6 weeks post op. Just because you've been lucky thus far doesn't mean luck will hold!

If they were a male and a female guinea pig I would be 100% that you would have had little babies running around if they have been together that long. I wouldn't be so sure that they are not 2 males as well.
Here is a good sexing guide that you can do your self to check.
Check the sex yourself at home, if they are both the same sex then no need to get one neutered and they can stay together.
