I recently took on a pair of older boys (after saying I wouldn’t have more). Spook is 3 and Sheepy 6. Spook has been diagnosed with a UTI in recent days after being hunched and doing red wees and is on a good dose of meloxaid twice a day and a course of Co trimaxazole. I am also giving cystophan. He is squeaking soooo much tho - for weeing and pooing. Every few minutes. He is still hungry for veg but off hay unsurprisingly. Do I need to hang on in there for ABs to work? I’ve had way too much experience of bladder pigs :( but I have never experienced so much squeaking. Thanks for thoughts

The antibiotics do take a couple of days to kick in. Don’t stop unless you’ve had confirmation from the vet. How long is he on them and what dosage of meloxaid is he on?

If he’s not eating hay you need to step in with syringe feeding (if you haven’t already). And weigh him once daily to make sure he’s getting enough.

I hope he starts feeling better soon.

O.4ml dog meloxaid twice a day but vet says I’m allowed to go up to 0.6ml if he looks rough - which he does.
Yeah I’m doing top up feeding already. He squeaks during syringing too but doesn’t stop him eating then. He is eating a green bean right now. I wouldn’t stop the ABs it’s more that the squeaking is pretty intense

My Larry and Eric were the same. Larry was given diazepam as a muscle relaxant and gabapentin to use alongside the metacam when he was in a lot of pain. It didn't make him drowsy and he tolerated them really well.
Might be worth asking your vet about?
Best of luck, hope Spook is feeling better soon. Bladder issues really are a nightmare 😢

Yes @Wheekallweek that’s a good thought - he is doing such tiny red wees that a muscle relaxant might help. Did u boys stop squeaking so much after a while or did they go onto have other issues eg stones?

Eric had a stone so had surgery to remove it back in June... unfortunately he didn't recover well and passed away the next morning 😢 Larry had the meds for a few days and they did help him somewhat, however he had some kind of serious issue with his bladder thickening and becoming solid, as well as a few other health issues (he was diabetic and had spondylosis of the spine due to arthritis), and unfortunately we had to make the decision to let him go a couple of weeks ago 😢
I hope this doesn't worry you too much, every piggy is different! I hope your piggy does well, I know you'll be trying whatever you can and sometimes that's all we can do.
Thoughts and prayers with you and Spook 🤞❤️

Sorry @Wheekallweek to bring back bad memories of year boys. I have had similar bladder related traumas with previous boys. Spook looks utterly rubbish again today and hiding in fleecy tunnel so I’m not feeling very hopeful but will keep chucking in the meds and tempting him with different food

Not at all, if it could possibly help another piggy in any way it's worth it.
Oh poor Spooks I truly hope he starts to feel better. It's awful when it's happened to a previous piggy and you see it happening again 😢
I hope and pray that things will turn out better for Spooks 🤞🙏❤️

Sending healing vibes to Spooks and hugs to you, it's so hard when they are ill. I'm going through a similar situation at the moment. We are finding Cystease is giving Red some comfort and the squeaking is becoming a little less. I've had so many bladder pigs over the years it's heart breaking to see them in so much pain.

Yes @piggieminder has a good point, I gave Eric and Larry Cystease long term and it certainly did them no harm, in fact it's very high in glucosamine which worked well for his arthritis. It might help with your older boys too, even just for their joints? X

I’m really sorry Spooks is so poorly. I’ve lost a piggy recently to a bladder stone. I wish you the very best outcome. ❤️

I’m so glad he is home. Make sure he doesn’t get too cold. You could put a warm (not hot) hot water bottle next to him so if he’s cold he can choose to snuggle next to it. I recently had a boar with a bladder stone. The nurse called me the following morning and said by that afternoon he should be up and moving around a bit. So keep an eye on your boy and if you are worried get him back to the vets.

PS my boy didn’t recover 😢

That’s good he’s home and already nibbling on food. Hope he continues to recover well.

Spook has made it thru night so that’s good but is very wobbly still. Has had some syringe feed and some chamomile tea which he does like but it was hard work. Think it’s going to be a long day 😣

May I ask what the chamomile tea is for? Hope he perks up soon. Are you topping him up regularly? And how was his weight?

You will have to review his diet. It takes time for the changes to have an effect but it’s worth it. Hope he’s feeling better soon.

So pleased you are still involved with guinea pigs Laura. Good experienced owners are rare. Here's hoping Spooks continues with his recovery.
I know he will be having the best care possible. Sending healing vibes over from York.
