Hi. Does anyone have experience of sows acting like they are in season way more often than they can be and not having ovarian cysts?

Sunflower is approx 18mths, in excellent health and part of a large herd. Over the past couple of months she has taken to mating with the other girls when they come into season and low key rumble strutting. It is not dominance behaviour, she is only ever interested in sows who are in season, the neutered male takes no notice of her what so ever and neither does the alpha sow or the two "would be" alpha sows. The other slightly odd thing is that she is often laying down (looking comfy) when everyone else is standing up.

She has had two vet checks. The first a couple of months back when I was concerned about the laying down, all checked out ok, no heart issues etc. The second visit was yesterday due to her increased hormonal behaviour and being worried about ovarian cysts. She was scanned and has no cysts or uterine abnormalities or any other abnormalities.

She is an easy going pig who gets on well with others and just seems to have taken to obliging anyone coming into season and looking for some action. (The boar is 4 years old and been neutered for three and has long since lost interest in mating.)

Any thoughts?

Hi!

Like you, normally I would say it is the start of ovarian cysts; the small hormonal variety and not the large non-hormonal fluid filled ones. Or this may predate the formation of visible cysts? There is so much we don't know yet about guinea pigs.

I currently have a sow who is constantly rumble-strutting; and it is not necessarily all the time connected with dominance. I am keeping an eye on her re. potential cysts in the future. She is about 17 months now.

That's interesting and a similar age to my piggy. I will see how she goes and have her rescaned at a later date as necessary.
