I posted on her a little while ago about my girl being ill, she's responded well to anti biotics and is breathing normally etc but she still seems quite uncomfortable on her stomach, so we rang up the vets and they've given her some pain meds with the advice that we should look at getting her xrayed of she's not better after a short course of those. The thing is we've been quoted £800 by Medivet, that just seems crazy to me! I've been given a breakdown and it all adds up but can anyone shed some light on whether this seems normal?

I’m really sorry I have no clue. It does sound a little extortionate but it may be the norm. What did the breakdown include? Were there costs for other tests in there as well? And would the X-ray be conscious or not?
I’ll tag @Wiebke @VickiA @Piggies&buns @PigglePuggle

So it includes general anesthetic at 340, the consultation at 30, admission to the vets for 40, materials 13 and 390 for the actual xrays

I think that’s quite extortionate! I took one of my sows to the vet as she had a stone blocking her urethra. They took x-ray, sedated her and removed the stone and it cost just under £160. And this was a guinea pig savvy vet. I would get another quote from another vet if you can.

Does sound rather expensive! I think my German shepherd cross dog had a far cheaper xray! (think it was £500-£600 region) It was a few years ago, but she had 4 plates done, anaesthetic, follow up appointment and she was 40kg roughly at the time! The anaesthetic is usually the most expensive followed by the xray plates.

Think I'd get a second opinion or ask them to check they haven't made a mistake or typo! Xx

:agr:Have a look at the vet locator at the top of the page and see what others are near you.

Hugely expensive. I have had many piggies xrayed and never paid anything like that amount. It’s definitely worth contacting other vets.

Silk had her hips & knees x-rayed last year and I think it was about £180. She even bit the nurse and they didn't charge extra 🤣

That is massively overpriced! Last time I had xrays done it cost me £20, £30 for an ultrasound after as it didnt pick up anything. I know my vets are really good to me, bless them, but even they wouldn't knock as much as £780 off of something 😅 I would definitely try to find somewhere that offers cheaper treatment. I dont know if thats what they normally charge but sadly i've seen some vets having to raise the cost of some things during this crisis, but even for that, thats excessive.

That sounds extortionate to me!
I paid £250ish for an xray and bladderstone removal (about 5 years ago admittedly) and 2 years ago I paid £40 then £50 for single plate conscious trays.

Thanks so much for your advice everyone! I thought it seemed like a huge amount but thankfully none of mine have ever needed it before so I wasn't sure I thought I would check since it only cost £170 total for our two rabbits to be spayed, so nearly 4 times that for an xray just seemed mad! I've contacted another vets near me who's on the vet locator on this forum and I'm booked in for a phone consultation tomorrow so hopefully we'll have Zoe fighting fit again soon!

My vets quoted me £300 for abdominal xrays, dental xrays and a general anaesthetic to try and find out the cause of one of my piggie's mystery weight loss.

That's ridiculous. My guy had a bladder stone removed last year and he had an x-ray, blood test, stone removed, nails clipped and after meds for £341. He previously had an x-ray done for about £65.
My previous vets did once quote me £450 for an x-ray though.

Yes £800 is very expensive, Puggle had an xray for bloat under buprenorphine sedation and we paid £180 in total for the consultation, the buprenorphine injection, xrays, subcutaneous fluids, an injection of gut meds, and oral gut meds and pain relief to take home...
