I'm *hoping* to eventually end up with a family of 7 piggies (6 sows and a neutered boar) but have no idea what size C&C I would need.

I've looked on http://www.guineapigcages.com but I'm no good with maths so can't figure out what would be required for 7. I'm planning on either a 2 or 3 level cage, the uppermost being a sizeable hayloft.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Think of it as 4' x 2' for a pair (a grid is 1' usually), so a 4 grid by 2 grid area for a pair, then an extra grid wide for each additional pig so

4 x 2 = 2 pigs
5 x 2 = 3 pigs
6 x 2 = 4 pigs
7 x 2 = 5 pigs
8 x 2 = 6 pigs
9 x 2 = 7 pigs

So a double decker 6 x 2 would be large enough, as long as they are all happy to use the ramps. Generally it's better to have as large an area as possible on one level, rather than say 3 smaller levels with ramps, as they all tend to gather on the same bit and it might be a bit crowded!

THANK YOU! - 9 grids is quite long for the space I have so could I adapt it to maybe 6x3, that way they still have the same floor space wouldn't they? (9x2=18, 6x3=18)... would that work instead and then I would also have additional space on upper levels. I could even go to 6x4 thinking about it so I think I'll do that... hubby doesn't know exactly HOW big a project this is gonna be but as long as I'm happy eh? ;) Just need to see how many more boxes of cubes I'll need (I've got 4 at the mo)... will just start building and see! x

I think that 6x3 is the equivalent of 9x2, I was told this by someone ( although I can't remember who! )

Ours is currently 4x3 with a 1x4 hayloft and is pretty big so 9x2 must be massive!

You'll find there aren't enough connectors but we used cable ties for extra support which work fine. You'll have to post a pic when the cage is all sorted, look forward to seeing what it's like!

Have you got your eyes on what pigs your going to get?

Yep, I certainly have! My heart is still being pulled in the direction of Ralph and Bumble Bee but obviously they'll have to be housed together in their own cage (I wrote in another thread about putting them on a level either above or below the girls cos I was told that it wouldn't be good to put them alongside sows cos it could cause friction amongst the boys) and the little cutie girls which have stolen my heart are Lizzi, Tilly and Scruffy (mother and daughters) I was also looking to put a neutered boar in with them and Layla said that Mischief was currently happily in living with them so that would be perfect. I know thats 6 but sometime in the future I'd like to increase this to 9 (I've got a "thing" about certain numbers) so that would mean that the main girls house would have to be big enough for 7 for when the time would arise that some other girls would live with me.

Ahh yes, I remember you mentioning Ralph and Bumble Bee. I've emailed Layla today to see if we can adopt Sam and Sookie as well x) Just waiting to hear back. It's so hard just to take two, I knew when I went I would want more and here a couple of weeks later I'm wanting to adopt another 2!

It's so nice that your willing to give so many pigs a loving home :) Do you know when you'll be set up to take them?

I'm hoping to have everything in place for the 1st May - providing Layla can do the homecheck before then cos I'm off for the week from the 3rd and would like to get them on the Saturday before so that I have longer getting to know them before I have to go back to work! x

Well, after MUCH deliberation I've decided on a 5x4 grid cage. I was thinking about a 6x3 but this way it fits better in the room and the girls would have that little bit extra space.

I *think* I've also decided on a 3x4 hayloft and if its suitable I'd like to put a pair of boys in a separate 3x4 home on the top!

I've built the carcas for the bottom level but need to clarify a point about connectors and cable ties (thread "Enclosed C&C cage" ) before I can progress to the next level.

God I must be boring everyone to death now with questions and stories about my as yet, non-existant cage! x

Thanks for the link, Yeah I'd seen that post previously but that set up is without the use of connectors. Its obviously just as strong without them (if Laura uses i as long ast in such a large set up) as long as I use LOTS of cable ties, so I think I'll just ditch the idea of using connectors all together. I'm heading off to B&Q shortly! x
