Hello 👋

I'm new to the forum but not new to owning guinea pigs. Lovely to meet you all.

I have a 5 year old male guinea pig called Ozzy who I took on last year from a lady who was keeping him alone and didn't want him anymore. He came to me with a patch of hair missing on his back which was also very flaky. Which she told me was just ' dandruff'

I obviously took him to my exotic vet who diagnosed hay mites and gave him a course of ivermectin. His hair didn't grow back and his skin was still very flaky. I returned to the vet and they treated him with a course of selamectin ( this was 2 months ago)

As he didn't improve I went to seek a second option. They told me they felt he had a fungal infection and treated him with a cream for this. ( I unfortunately cannot recall the name) Again he didn't improve. I was also told his teeth were overgrown but at this point if he is eating well to just leave them. He also had very crusty ears which I've been cleaning for him with some prescribed solution. Another slight issue is a weeping gland which just requires cleaning every few days.

Aside from this and being quite a sleepy guinea pig he appeared well.

5 weeks ago he started with some nasal discharge. I took him to the vets again and they told me he appeared well and not to worry. I just had a feeling however something wasn't quite right.

3 weeks later he started showing signs of discomfort and there was some blood in his urine. I requested they do an xray and ultrasound of his bladder which was completed and came back clear. They prescribed a 10 day course of antibiotics.

This morning I noticed his poo was becoming very dry, stringy and there was a massive reduction in the amount he was passing. He was more fatigued than usual. He wasn't eating and was hiding away. When out for floor time he could only stand a little while before laying down. He was also struggling to walk. I started feeding critical care and took him to the vets this afternoon . They gave him fluids IV, a gut stimulant and have increased his pain medication. I've been told to observe and if no changes they will complete an abdominal ultrasound.

I'm syringe feeding 4 hourly ( as directed), encouraging him to eat watery foods such as cucumber, and keeping up with his pain meds as directed. Is there anything else I could be doing to help? I've heard about Fibreplex. Is this something that would help keep the gut moving? I feel like this episode of gut issues is secondary to a primary problem but the vet has told me she cannot feel any masses when examining him.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks 😊

I’m sorry to hear this.

Fibreplex is a probiotic, it will help boost for bacteria which keeps the gut healthy. It’s not a medication, it’s a supplement but would be advisable to give.

Ensure you switch to daily weight checks rather than the weekly ones so you can be sure he is getting enough syringe feed to keep his weight stable each day.

I’ve added guide below

I hope he is ok and that, if the bloating is secondary, that you can find the cause
