My boys are 5 weeks and 4 days post neuter. All healed up and doing very well.

They are going to be bonding with my two sows (one boy to one girl). They are pretty much bonded as they’ve always lived side by side and supervised test introductions so far have gone well.
There pen is due a clean out and the plan is to house them together from this clean out . They are 5 weeks , 4 days post neuter . Do I need to wait for 6 weeks exactly or should they be protected from pregnancy now?

Is 6 weeks exactly ok to put them together? Some things I’ve read online say 8 weeks but my vet said 6. I definitely do not want a pregnancy.

i agree with the other two posters. Not worth having an accident.i do appreciate how long it seems, when you are so excited to get on with the bonding.please resist the temptaions for 3 days !

Coming to the end of a long wait is always the most difficult time; temptation is getting greater with every day you get closer to the line.

I would recommend to wait until Sunday with your intros.

6 weeks has been the accepted UK waiting limit as adopted and practised by the RSPCA, other welfare conscious rescues and owner circles since Tegan's surprise birth in 2011 (the little baby in my avatar). In this time, literally thousands of neutered boars have had their 6 weeks wait without any accidental pregnancies ensuing. Believe me, it would make the rounds like wildfire if the limit needed to be extended!

While semen in the tubes can stay live for up to three months after neutering, the likelihood of a viable pregnancy resulting seems to be extremely remote after 6 weeks. It may happen at some point or other, especially as boar neutering is becoming more widely practised, but it is also very much in the realm of winning the lottery.

Any arbitrary limit is always ultimately a balance act and compromise between ensuring that the overwhelming majority of piggies are safe and extending the time spent in rescue even further, which means that other piggies in need may have to wait until space taken up by - for all intents and purposes healthy piggies - is not available.

The 6 weeks limit seems to have worked very well for all practical intents and purposes for the last decade. Shorter limits (as some people and vets still recommend) have however resulted in quite a few pregnancies, as we have been witness to on this forum repeatedly. We have however never been contacted by somebody with a post 6 weeks pregnancy in all 15 years of our forum existence and definitely not in the last decade with boar neutering becoming a lot more practised and therefore generally safer due to generally increased experience with small pet ops.

Definitely wait the full 6 weeks! Its always an exciting wait, but it's worth it!
