i am wanting to make a 2x6 cage with high sides as I'm making a coroplast only cage since grids arent that sturdy and a bit of a pain. i was thinking maybe 12in sides? would a 4x8ft sheet be able to have sides that high? if not i can go a little smaller i dont have guinea pigs yet but I'm wanting two so 2x6 isnt a must have just want lots of room. would also love recommendations on the wall height since I'm not using grids.:{

erm

a 8x4ft sheet can make a 6ftx2ft (72 x 24 inch) cage with 1ft/12 inch walls high walls I have made that before but 6x2 c&c is quite a bit bigger :D

it will be big enough to make a base but you might not have enough to do 12 inch walls :D

edit: some basic maths says no you cant have 12 inch sides on a 6x2 C&C! see below

a 6x2 c&c is approx 84 inches x 28 inches (assuming 14 inch grids cable tied together)

and the sheet is 96 x 48

so you could make a 96x48 inch tray with 10 inch walls at the sides and 4 inch at the top and bottom

a 5x2 C&C could be made using the sheet and have high walls as this cage would measure 70 inches by 28 inches (assuming 14 inch grids cable tied together) so you could have 10 inch sides all the way around :D

that sounds great i tried to do the math in my head and just couldnt today so that was a very helpful explanation :(|) thank you. a 2 by 5 is still good size so thats ok with me. they wont be able to escape from 10in sides will they? I'm only using grids to hold up a second level so i wont be using them to go around the cage.

The maths in old money was easier numbers for me like :D never really worked in imperial before ... but small numbers + tired bekki = easier than bigger numbers with decimal places using metric!

You will need strong correx for the bottom if not using grids :D 5mm thick at least id say.

You dont even need to make a top level really if you dont want to and then you could keep it simple and have a 6x2ft cage with 1ft walls and no grids and it would work out cheaper that way :D heres a video showing mine :D its a bit shaky but you can see it quite well [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvSFXy-jVJs"]New Guinea pig correx/corotherm/coroplast only C&C cage and room update! - YouTube[/ame]

If you have already got grids id suggest using them as it makes hanging water bottles and making it nice and strong easier especially if you are using thinner correx and are weary of escapeees! I can imagine some pigs will be able to escape 10 inches especially if they have plastic houses and stuff in the cage they can jump on first mine never escaped the 12 inch walls though but they were old lazy girls

I used an 8ft x 4ft piece without grids with 9" sides, it was a lot bigger than I was expecting. I thing 9/10" should be enough :)

thanks for the video :) I'm thinking about getting two sheets. i want the main area to be one sheet though so its sturdier and yes its 5mm thickness so no problems there. i have 13 grids so i was gonna use them to hold up a 2x2 loft area and it would easily be removeable for cleaning the main area. i do have hay racks already and one grid just for the water bottle. so 9-10 in would be ok? i may try that. ive had a 2x4 last time i had guinea pigs and loved it except for the grids which got on my nerves I'm also thinking i may want babies this time and found a rescue with some expecting mommy pigies so I'm wanting to make sure they cant get out. i finally found a place in the area with coroplast and pretty cheap i told them what i wanted the sheets for and they were surprised that guinea pigs really needed that much space!
