HELP! We have 3 males and now one is getting pushed out I have put him on his own so he doesn't get bitten on the backside anymore and also so he can gain his weight back. I don't mind getting another piggie for him but how do I go about it do I have to get him neutered?

I'm afraid this is a common problem with boar trios. Are you in the UK? There are several rescues in the UK that can help owners find compatible guinea pigs for boars ( we call it boar dating).

Yes I'm in roydon Essex I'm hoping I don't have to get him neutered to do this though where do I start lol? Just call any rescue?

PS - neutering does not change male guinea pig behaviour so, it is only worth considering if you are looking for a female companion for your boar.

There is a rescue locator bar at the top of the page which will show you the rescues near you.

Hi and welcome!

How old are your boys and where do you live? This will inform your options to a large extent. Please add your country, state or (for the UK) your county to your details by clicking on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. We have got members from all over the world.

Unfortunately, 90% of baby boar trios don't make it to adulthood together. :(

Your options depends on how much space you have got, how our rescue and vet access is.
- living alongside: possible but not ideal for a sociable piggy. it depends on being able to provide him with constant interaction and stimulation through the bars.
- boar dating: many of our recommended rescues will allow you to bring your boy for dating under expert supervision at the rescue, so he can choose for character compatibility, ideally with a laid-back adult boar if the has been badly bullied. Another baby could mean a repeat of the bullying once the youngster is hitting the teenage hormones himself.
- neutering: only recommended if you are thinking about pairing up with a sow or two after a 6 weeks post op wait.
You will need to find either a general vet with plenty of guinea pig neutering experiencing (usually by neutering for a rescue) or an exotics vet with practice in small furries operations in order to minimise the risk of especially post-op complications. I have got the surprise daughter of a suppoesedly safe over 5 weeks post op boar, just to prove the point about the 6 weeks wait, which is practised by good standard rescues anyway and seems to the be the safe waiting period.
On the plus side: cross gender bondings are the most stable of all piggy pairings once initial acceptance has happened (again, ideally at a rescue under expert supervision, so you know that things will work out when you bring a new mate or two home).

We have got UK good standard piggy savvy rescue and vet locators on the top bar, but may also be able to provide links for rescues and vets in other countries.

Thanks for all your replies we have a lot of space and enough grass to keep 100 gpigs happy lol. and the vet did tell me that neutering does not change behaviour unlike other species. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make this little chap happy obviously I would prefer the cheapest way but I'm very aware that to keep animals happy and healthy it costs money. I'm hoping luck is on his side as he is the most soppiest and laid back piggy we have had.

I can't find the tool bar to find local rescues that provide bonding service I suppose Google search will be the same

Never tried bonding three piggies, we've manage to bond two pairs of piggies though. Two young boars aged about 5 and 3 months at the time and just recently an older boar around 2 and a half and 2 years old. As someone said there are rescue's that will help you with finding the right guinea pig for yours.

Good luck with finding your guinea a friend, I hope it goes well :)

Click on meu then you will find rescue locator on a phone, I think.
No worries I've been in touch with the wood Green animal shelter and they will taking in my piggy to do a bonding service so hopefully we will give an unwanted piggie a new home and successfully find a friend for strawberry!
