Hi everyone. I’m a new piggy owner and it’s my first post. I’ve had my two little piggies — Ginger and Snap — for about 2 weeks now. They’re both boys and I got them from a Pets at Home store when they were 11 weeks old.

On day 2, I woke up and Ginger’s eye was suddenly red around the outside and very swollen/bulbous. It happened over night as it was okay before. Took him to emergency vet who said it was probably hay poke and gave some eye drops, and said to bring him back in 5 days.

The next vet I saw, after the eye drops had shown some improvement and the eye was a lot less red and swollen, said that he was completely blind in that eye (it’s very misty and he did reaction tests) and that the actual eyeball was big and swollen, which may mean there is something pushing it out. He said the only 2 options were surgery to have the eye removed, and he may not survive the anaesthetic because he’s so tiny, or to have him PTS.

I was shocked as he is a very happy little Guinea pig, and I had thought the eye was looking better — albeit he has lost vision. He eats plenty and plays fine with his brother and popcorns around the cage quite happily. It’s hard to say because I’ve only had him 2 weeks but he really doesn’t seem in pain or like the eye is annoying him.

I’ve been giving him antibiotics and anti inflammatories for the past few days under the vets advice, and the surrounding skin around the eye looks much better. The eye is still big but it’s nothing like I’ve seen some piggies have (I’ve been researching online!)

Pets at Home have agreed to foot the bill so it’s not a money issue right now. I just feel very hesitant to put him through a traumatic surgery or have him PTS when he’s just a baby and he seems… fine? I’ve also really bonded with him and he’s the sweetest little guy who loves being stroked and cuddled. My instinct is telling me an op isn’t right but I don’t know if it’s just wishful thinking.

Does anyone have any advice or similar experiences? Thank you so much 🥰

I would say if your options are an operation with the primary risk being the anaesthesia, or PTS, I would go with the operation. Not quite the same situation, but when I was faced with a similar choice, I decided to try to save my piggy. In her case, it was bloat, and to remove the gas, they needed to anaesthetize my nearly-6 year old piggy and draw it out with a needle/syringe. She did wake up and despite her given chances of "greater than 0," she made a full recovery to the point where the vets at the follow-up visit the following day could barely believe the radiographs belonged to her. My thought process was that if the main risk of the procedure was that she might not wake up, it was no worse than choosing PTS. With my girl, there was a risk of recurrence (which thankfully didn't occur). With your baby, the risk would be infection at the surgical site, though an injured eye is already at risk for complications, which is probably why they're not offering to leave the eye. You could try to get a second opinion if you think things are improving, but if my options are surgery or PTS, I'd pick surgery.

Could you see a vet who specialises in guinea pigs? Some vets don't have much experience with guinea pigs and the risks of wrong treatment or complications during an operation are much higher.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I don’t have any experience of this issue but wanted to send healing vibes your piggy’s way. Good luck.

Thanks everyone who has replied so far. Princess Dustmop, I’m so glad your piggie made a full recovery ❤️‍🩹

I think I would like to get a second opinion but I’m worried about the cost associated with that. The vet did suggest an ophthalmologist but it would be hundreds of pounds for a referral and Pets at Home wouldn’t cover that.

I’m definitely not considering having him PTS right now as he doesn’t seem in pain or suffering and he’s only a baby. Just really don’t want him to have to go through an operation :(

I am sorry to hear that your boy needs his eye removing :( My Eliza had the same surgery at 6 years old and she sailed through the op. She lived a very happy life with only the one eye until she died from old age. They adapt really well

Hello and welcome to the forum
So sorry your little man has a poorly eye, has the vet told you exactly what the problem is? In some ways your piggie has age on his side and being young, good powers of healing. I would ask the vet if they have had experience of eye removal on guinea pigs, it is not uncommon and there are quite a few one eyed guinea pigs on this forum. The anaesthetic is always going to be a risk factor in any op but if he has a good outcome and recovers well he will manage fine with one eye
Wishing him the very best of luck x

Thanks for all your advice everyone. Just a little update on Ginger… 🐹

I kept up with the antibiotics and other meds and took him back to the vet yesterday and she said he was doing brilliantly. The swelling had gone down loads and the eye was less cloudy and he seemed in very good health, having gained 100g!

She’s happy for me to monitor his eye and not to take any further action at this stage - so I really hope he’s escaped the operation. Couldn’t be happier that my little pig is on the mend xx
