thank you so muchI have three girls. I adopted them through one of the forum recommended rescues at 4months old. They are thought to be closely related, but that is no guarantee of bond!
They have a 7x2 C&C cage during the week when we’re at work and on Saturday and Sunday they come downstairs and have the run of my dining room.
They all get along really well and although there’s a clear hierarchy I’ve had no issues with them at all and there is no ‘outsider’ situation.
It is possible and it is lovely watching harmonious dynamics!
thank youIn terms of the facts, sows are wired to live in herds and can be kept in any numbers but even numbers generally work best to prevent outsider situations occurring. That’s not to say three won’t work, but, any piggy relationship comes entirely down to having the correct match of characters so just because it works for one person doesn’t mean it is always going to work, particularly when dealing with pet shop purchased babies. They are just put together in an enclosure and generally purchased on the basis of looks rather than actually having been correctly matched together. It’s incredibly hard to know what the characters will be when they are babies so nobody can know how things will turn out once they hit their teens.
Sows: Behaviour and female health problems (including ovarian cysts)
I originally started with two sows and it was perfectly fine. For the first two weeks, they were establishing a hierarchy which is normal. Now I have four girls due to an unplanned pregnancy and they get along fine. It does depend on personality but to minimize any problems it is best to give them as much space as possible, one of everything for each pig and lots of enrichment ideas. I would like to get one neutered boar but I would need to expand the spacehi, does anyone have 3 guinea pigs living together? particularly 3 females? have you had any issues with one of the piggies being left out? thanks
thanks- i have a 6 by 5In terms of giving them enough space, this is our Cage Size Guide. Three piggies require a 2ft x 6ft cage (if you were to have a c&c cage then that is 2 grids x 5 grids) (although with any animal, the bigger space beyond recommended sizes you can give them the better)
I have a husboar for the first time now. He's such a gentle boy. Always seems to keep an eye out for his wife. Just sayingI had a herd of 4 sows who adapted to being a herd of 3 when the matriarch, Merab, died.
They were all fine and I had no problems with them.
They have since acquired a husboar.
