Hi there all, managed to grab a bargain £9 cage 2 tiers, looks like a 120cm not measured it yet came from the local charity shop. not planning on using it lots as the girls have their hutch, but seemed too good to miss! probably just use it indoors when we have bad weather or if need some extra space . or for sleep-overs :laluot_28:

Just wondered what would everybody suggest to clean it with? i usually use johnsons hutch cleaner spray for the hutch, but would this be strong enough for the first clean of the cage or should i get something more heavy duty?
the shop didnt know what animals had been kept in there previously, dont want to pass on any diseases to my girls!

guess i would need a steralizing fluid? any suggestions? thanks.

I would use a mild bleach solution and leave it to soak, then rinse thoroughly and clean a couple of times after as normal.

If there is any urine staining on it, i cannot recommend white vinegar highly enough, leaving it to soak will bring the cage up as good as new - promise! Again though it will need a thorough cleaning after.

Sounds like a bargain, i too would have had to have it!

I think a couple of rescue piggies would love to come and live in it :))

xx

I used a very mild bleach solution and and then leave to soak, then rinse thoroughly and when dry i use the Johnsons spray on top to be sure. I agree white vinegar is amazing i would use that before the bleach if theres wee staining present. Definately sounds like a bargain :)

Yes, definitely use white vinegar for any wee stains. For the rest I'd use the Dettol Antibacterial spray.

Oh no i mustn't. my girls wouldn't like competition! I always try to limit myself to 2... very hard but practical. (Very difficult to fit my 2 "solid" girls on my lap for cuddle time.. dont think another 1 or 2 could squeeze in!) although years ago my first ever piggy pair turned into a trio of girls! i ended up with a big squishy hairy lap or one of them would sit on my neck & snuggle ito my cheek x)
the temptation will be great though ;)

Thanks for all the advice, never gave vinegar a thought...guess it will blitz the calcium deposits perfectly. will be trying the jigsaw puzzle of putting it together from flatpack tomorrow-hopefully its all there, looks like its enough cage-work though. DIY skills here i come @) :o

Hi there all, i braved the elements & bleached & scrubbed the cage outside today, think i've done it all... inside & out, plastic & bars... backache to show for it! ouch! mallethead

heres a pic of a similar cage http://www.amazon.co.uk/Large-Indoo...=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B00AQM425Q unfortunately its only a 100cm, now i have had the chance to measure it, but its only for occasional use anyway.
i only need to replace the wooden ramp as it was all mouldy, couldnt be bothered to clean it- decided would be safer to replace!

?/ i am intrigued though, can anybody tell me what the spring is for? or is this a previous owners modification? I did wonder if it was for the door, but it's currently attached to the cage nowhere near the door. Does anyone else have a spring on their cage?

Sorry no pics at the moment..camera's jaffed! Thanks for any info. xx

May the spring be a water bottle holder ? We have springs to attach our bottles on to the cage x

What a bargain i nearly brought one of these full price a few weeks ago, my local charity shops tend to have rubbish in so lucky find :) I agree might be water bottle related :)
