Hi

I collected two, seven week old guinea pigs today. I have had Guinea's before but this was many years ago.

They have a two storey hutch and are currently in the top level which has their bed, food and water and the ramp to the bottom level.

I am now worried that I have done the wrong thing and shouldn't have put them in a two storey hutch. Reason being that I have now been told that baby guinea pigs shouldn't be in a two storey hutch and could injure themselves.

Should I remove the ramp and try to block the gap (not even sure if I can do that) or will they be ok? I'd feel awful if they fell and hurt themselves.

I plan to order a ramp tunnel from cosy cavies but am worried they might fall in the meantime and while they are so little

Any advice?

Thanks

Can you put everything on the bottom floor and remove the ramp? Just until your tunnel arrives.

Mine do just fine with ramps, please dont feel you have done wrong. Putting a tunnel on it is fine if you are worried. When I had two pair seperate in a double hutch i just covered the hole with a box lid and some cardboard, if you want to block it off.

x.

I had thought of that, however the bottom of the hutch doesn't have a nesting area so both doors have open wire and I wouldn't want them to get cold.

Perhaps a big guinea pig house with a lot of hay inside would be ok?

The hutch does have a hutch hugger so its protected from the wind and rain.

Thank you for your advice

I will see if I can block the ramp off for now and then look to modify the ramp with side or a tunnel to make it a bit safer for them to use

My pigs live in a double hutch too. I'd be tempted to put them down at the bottom with everything they need and a box of hay they can snuggle in. That way they're safe from falling, have a cosy bed and can try out the ramp when they start to feel adventurous. Worked for my lot :)

Don't worry. I have a two story cage. I have raised 2 litters in their since birth. They are fine. I have 3 four week olds in there now and they have learnt to go safely up it by watching the adults.. I don't see why people are making such a fuss about it! Any way. It's your choice but I'm just saying that its not a problem at all! They will be fine!

I had a 2 storey hutch with a newborn pig in it but my ramp had sides, once he found out how to use it there was no stopping him & no escape for mum :)
