Hi all!

It's been a while since I've posted here so a little background -

We got our two males in early January - they'd been living in harmony until approx. 6-8 weeks ago, when they started scrapping and teeth chattering at each other. They were in a large 120cm cage with separate everything.

On Friday, I checked on them before bed - Stripey (other is called Mo) had a rather nasty looking scratch under his eye. I'd heard them scrapping, but had thought it was just the usual, but this time it turned a bit nastier.

We immediately brought in the 2 tier hutch from outdoors (it was stored out there under a tarpaulin - we'd meant to sell it weeks ago but luckily forgot), and separated them onto the separate levels and removed the ladder. We had to do this, as we were flying to Paris the next morning, and obviously couldn't risk the scrapping getting worse whilst we weren't there (we had pet sitters coming in twice daily for feeding, etc).

Now, I've ordered a two tier cage (the hutch indoors is driving me mad, but I don't like the idea of them being outdoors in it!) - 100cm length, with the idea of keeping them separate initially, but gradually reintroducing them to each other over the next few weeks. How do I go about this?

Obviously, the idea is that if reintroducing doesn't succeed, they can just live separately over the two levels, but can still talk to each other (no teeth chattering has occurred since their separation).

Can they realistically live like this, or do they need to be "together"? The world of piggies is rather more hard work than first thought (we've only ever had the cat Ralph previously!).

Ps, sorry I know this was a but long-winded! LOL

PPS - Stripey is fine, his eye has healed nicely, poor thing!

hi glad stripey is fine now
it's a bit weird that they were fine for all those weeks and then suddenly they don't like each other ?
I started with one male guinea pig called alvin and decided to buy him a friend they wouldn't get on and were hurting each other so had to give the new one away. most people say males don't really get on unless they are from the same litter. personally I would seperate them in two cages and only let them see each other when you let them out. hope this helped :)?

It is a myth that litter mates are more likely to get on. I am sorry your boys fell out. I will tag somebody to help you. @Rodentopia
