Hi there, I have two boars Ziggy and Zion.
They are separated because they will not establish whose dominant. I’ve tried many different methods. They have a cage with a divider and free roam 24/7 with a gate to separate the two. Ziggy (3yrs) managed to get on Zions side (1yr) while I was not in the room. Ziggy ripped out a clump of Zions fur with skin attached. I managed to find where it was ripped out and it is not bleeding, but there is a break in the skin. Photo attached. Do you think it’s necessary to clean it since there was no blood drawn?

With love,

ouch! That lokd sore poor piggy. With a wound like that he should be seen by a vet to make sure there is no infection.

No, piggy is not sore. It did not draw blood.

Just because blood wasn't drawn doesn't mean it's not sore. I don't know about you but when I scratch my arms on anything or the piggy nails scratch me it hurts more and for longer than most cuts that draw blood. I would make sure its cleaned with saline to try and prevent anything getting in to cause infection and consider a vets visit.

It hurts initially for me if my pig scratches me but one minute later I forgot about it. The reason I don’t think he is sore is because the break in the skin isn’t inflated or red. I applied warm saline solution and he showed no signs of pain, he’s also eating, popcorning, and running around playfully. Thanks for your advice

Guinea pigs are programmed not to show pain or illness until it is too late as they are prey animals and to show weakness of any kind could mean the difference between staying alive and being eaten. So just because your piggy isn't showing any signs of pain doesn't mean he isn't in pain.

Keep a close eye on him and check the wound daily for signs of redness, swelling or weeping. Keep a close eye on his weight and overall behaviour as well as if he is in pain it's likely he will stop eating enough so that might be the only sign you get

This is 12 hours later and it already looks better. Pretty much just a bald spot image.webp
